HEAL Health Education Australia Limited (HEAL), formerly the Victorian Medical Postgraduate Foundation (VMPF)

Health Education Australia Limited (HEAL), formerly the Victorian Medical Postgraduate Foundation (VMPF) has offered a richness of healthcare education programs since its establishment in 1920. VMPF began as an organisation that provided postgraduate medical education prior to the establishment of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). As Colleges were formed, the appropriate educational activities were transferred. Since then the organisation has adapted its vision and mission over nearly 100 years of operation to suit the needs of its members and stakeholders. Today, HEAL combines its history and experience to deliver educational opportunities with a multidisciplinary focus to a range of professionals in the healthcare industry. This focus on multidisciplinary services allows us the ability to offer quality bridging courses for international medical graduates, a simulated patient program and a range of custom-designed courses for all health professionals developed through collaborations across disciplines and sectors. The name HEAL also reflects an expansion of our services beyond Victoria to become nationwide. This supports our much broader focus on the healthcare profession as a whole and better reflects our vision. HEAL and its predecessor have always been, and remain, a not-for-profit organisation. Why choose HEAL? Support that goes beyond exam prep.

HEAL has supported the medical community for more than a century, and as a not-for-profit organisation, our focus has always been on providing education that genuinely helps IMGs succeed in Australia’s healthcare system.

Our tutors are experienced clinicians who are specially trained to teach and support international medical graduates. Students regularly tell us how much they value the clear explanations, practical guidance, and constructive feedback they receive throughout our courses.

HEAL courses focus on real-world preparation, not memorisation. Our teaching reflects the expectations of the AMC exams and Australian clinical practice, helping you build confidence in communication, clinical reasoning, and patient-centred care.

Support doesn’t stop when your course ends. Through IMG Connect, HEAL also provides access to job resources, interview preparation, CPD pathways, and career guidance to support you at every stage of your journey.

By using the time to revise clinical knowledge, practise cases, or follow a structured study routine, you can maintain momentum and build confidence. Even small, consistent steps - like weekly case review or targeted exam preparation - help sharpen clinical reasoning and keep you exam-ready.
This kind of ongoing learning also shows commitment and readiness when you return to job applications or AMC exam preparation.

When job applications ask for selection criteria, simply repeating your CV isn’t enough.

Strong applications use clear, specific examples from real clinical practice to show how skills meet each requirement. This might include managing acutely unwell patients, working effectively in multidisciplinary teams, or communicating with patients and families.

A simple structure can help: explain what you did, how you did it, and the outcome. Thoughtful, targeted responses like this can make the difference between being shortlisted or overlooked.

This is one area where preparation really pays off.

This is a widespread question among IMGs; the answer is: it depends.

If you’ve passed the MCQ only, it is possible to find work, but competition is tougher. Some hospitals will only consider candidates who have passed the Clinical exam, and while limited registration may be an option, many roles require provisional registration, which comes after passing the Clinical.

Once you’ve passed the Clinical exam, your job prospects improve significantly. You become eligible for provisional registration, which makes you a much stronger candidate and opens up more opportunities.

A smart strategy shared by IMGs is to apply early and apply broadly. Rural and regional hospitals are often more flexible, and states like Queensland and Tasmania rely heavily on IMGs and may be more open to candidates who have only completed Part 1.

Knowing where you sit in the pathway can help you plan your exams and your job search more effectively. Read more: https://buff.ly/mrzNVWO
