Due to the continuing increase in COVID-19 cases and recent outbreaks. We have made the difficult and considered decision to re-introduce visitor restrictions.

We are aware of the challenges patients and their loved ones may have as a result of these restrictions. However, we are still making every effort to protect our patients, carers, visitors and our staff.

You can help reduce the spread and thus, allow visitor restrictions to be reduced again by getting vaccinated, wearing a mask (even when you don't have to) and practising physical distancing where you can.

“It’s important for everyone to look after themselves and their families. Within our community as a whole, we are always putting other people first and I love being able to make sure that everyone has access to the healthcare they need and that the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison is there at every stage of their medical care, so they know what is available to them in their hospital journey”

Stacey recently joined Eastern Health as an Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer. She takes pride in being able to help and understand the needs of her community.

“I think it’s important that everyone who needs this service knows that this service exists. It's good for everyone to have a familiar face throughout their journey. Knowing that we are there to support them emotionally and culturally and being able to interpret some medical jargon, feels good.”

Approximately 128,000kg of CO2 will be offset thanks to solar panels recently installed on the roof of Maroondah Hospital.

The 99kW array will contribute an expected 130 megawatt-hours of electricity to the site annually. This is one of the many steps we are taking in our commitment to sustainability.

Thank you to the Eastern Health Engineering and Infrastructure teams for their great efforts to make this happen.

Maroondah Hospital Emergency Department are currently in the process of erecting a marquee outside the front entrance. This will assist with the streaming of patients through the department, and will be used only for non-COVID Patients.

The marquee will provide 12 assessment spaces for walk-in patients whilst they await onward management of their presenting condition as required. The space will be fully operational with heating, cooling and air purification to ensure the comfort and safety of both the patients and staff. There will also be toilets outside the front entrance of the hospital to support the patients within the marquee.

We will update you when this new workflow process will come in to effect.

A former nurse herself, 75-year-old Sue Pasco knows it takes a special something to work as a Breast Care Nurse. Diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram earlier this year, Sue said the support of Eastern Health’s breast care nursing team helped her through a challenging time.

“I didn’t know I had a lump or think anything was wrong when I was diagnosed,” said Sue. “The lump was discovered in January, I had surgery in February, and completed a month of radiotherapy by April. But throughout all of it, the nurses were just lovely.”

Sue says she and her friends often discuss the merits of health care, with many feeling you get what you pay for. Sue has a different opinion.

“Good care rests with the clinicians themselves,” she said. “Access to the right treatment is crucial, but it’s the care that makes a difference to your recovery.”

Sue felt so strongly about her positive experience, that she reached out to Eastern Health to pass on her praise. “I couldn’t fault any part of my treatment. From the radiologist to the surgeon to the oncologist ad then the wonderful breast care nurses helping with daily dressing changes, I am very grateful and wish to say thank you.”

As many of our locals know, the weather last night was wild.

This has caused a number of our facilities - including Healesville Hospital Yarra Valley Health and Maroondah Hospital - to experience power disruptions.

Work is underway to resolve this as soon as possible.

We will be in touch with patients directly if their appointments are affected.

Stay safe out there.

“If you do notice any change, I think it’s really important to get it checked out because we know self-detection is crucial.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Danielle’s powerful personal story is a reminder to stay breast aware, no matter your age.

Women's Health Week is a really important week to remind women to focus on themselves and their health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We know women have been hesitant about coming to have their BreastScreen during the pandemic. We have seen a 40% reduction in the early detection of breast cancer.

We urge women to be breast aware, keep up with your BreastScreen appointments and if you have any concerns, please see your GP.
