There are moments in life when holding on feels like the safest option… but it is actually what puts us at risk.
This was one of those moments.
Seconds after this photo was taken, I was flipped out of the raft and into a raging river (I’m wearing the pink helmet). Everything in me wanted to cling on to the raft, to control, to what felt safe and familiar.
But holding on would have pulled me under.
So I had to do the exact opposite of what my instincts were screaming…
I had to let go.
Let go of the raft.
Let go of control.
Let go of the illusion of security.
Both in the water and in life, sometimes the very thing we are gripping so tightly to is the thing that is keeping us stuck, or even pulling us under.
Letting go can feel terrifying.
Exposing.
Uncertain.
But sometimes… it is the only way to come back up for air.
I am still scared of water. That did not magically disappear.
But I showed myself that I can face fear, trust myself, and move through it, even when it feels overwhelming.
