Do you have a sore, aching or clicking jaw?

TMJ dysfunction is something that Osteopaths commonly see in clinic.
We will assess your neck and spine, the muscles at the front of your neck and local jaw muscles to help achieve optimal functioning - and less pain

Sometimes we will also treat the muscles inside the mouth (with gloves of course!), which can be intense but incredibly effective at releasing tension.

INTERNAL TMJ OSTEO TECHNIQUES

Have you ever had an osteopath work inside your jaw before?

It can be a beautifully direct way to address the pterygoid and temporalis muscles which are involved in closing your mouth - and grinding and clenching your jaw!
These techniques can be extremely effective in releasing jaw tension. Let your osteopath know if you have any jaw pain, clicking or tension that's bothering you.

PGP is pain that can be felt in the front and/or the back of your pelvis that can also affect other areas such as the hips or thighs and low back.
It can affect the sacroiliac joints at the back and/or the p***c symphysis joint at the front.

Relaxin is a hormone released through pregnancy which causes ligaments and other soft tissues to become more lax (this is a necessary change for the body to be able to carry the baby and for birth!). It actually has peak levels around 12 weeks, which is why some can get pelvic and back pain in the first trimester.

Ankle Sprains are one of the most common injuries to the lower limb. They involve overstretching of the ligaments around the ankle joint and often are caused by some uneven footing and/or a fall.
Some of these are mild, some can involve significant ligament damage.

Grade 1: Ligament stretching and/or minor tearing. Minimal swelling and tenderness and usually able to weight bear soon after injury. These usually resolve within 14 days.

Grade 2: Partial ligament tear. There might be swelling, pain and stiffness. Might feel unstable on ankle and unable to walk.

Grade 3: Complete rupture of ligament/s. Significant swelling, may be painful (occasionally not!). Unable to weight bear, feeling unstable.

Our osteopaths are able to assist in diagnosing whether you have ligament damage, and create a rehab program for you to build strength and function back.
Our team have experience in working with sporting teams and are very passionate about getting you back doing what you love!

Did you know that the rib cage can actually widen as much as 10cm during pregnancy?

Also the costal (rib) angle increases too, to make space for the growing uterus.

This can lead to symptoms of rib pain, indigestion, reflux and shortness of breath.

Osteopaths can reduce tension through the spine, ribs and adjacent muscles using a range of techniques such as massage, stretching and gentle balancing techniques.

Get in contact if this looks and sounds like something you need!

TORTICOLLIS

Torticollis is a condition in young babies where tightness in their neck causes the head to tilt to one side and may also rotate to the other side.
It is often present at birth, but can also develop over time.

You may notice:
- Stiffness in your baby's neck or body
- chin/head tilts to one side
- Preference to sleep to one side
- Preference to breastfeed on one side

This is often due to tightness in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle, which often occurs due to positioning in the womb.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Some mild torticollis will resolve itself, but many babies need some assistance with exercises and manual therapy.
Because baby's skull bones are soft, torticollis can lead to flattening on one side of the head which affects their head shape and symmetry.
Optimal symmetry and balance can allow a baby to develop to their best potential.

WHAT TO DO?
Diagnosis is important to help decide the course of action. We can assess and treat using gentle osteopathy techniques.
We also give home exercises to promote safe stretching and strengthening of the neck muscles.

It's important to note here that osteopaths love to look at the whole body! We may also find stiffness or tension in the spine, pelvis or hips, in which case we also treat these to achieve balance through the entire body.

How lovely it is when little ones enjoy their osteo treatment as much as this!

This little boy has been getting treatment to help him progress through some motor milestones like sitting and crawling, and also some digestive issues/discomfort.

He’s loving to sit now and almost an up-on-all-fours bandit πŸ‘πŸΌ
