From our experience in the clinic, a common cause for an unsettled baby is lip or tongue tie
These make it harder for your baby to latch when feeding, causing your baby to take in excessive air
We assess for lip and tongue ties, as well as how well your baby is latching
Our gentle chiropractic baby adjustments and baby massage aim to restore nerve function to the neck, jaw, and tongue, helping your baby latch
If necessary, we will refer you to a paediatric dentist

Your child’s ability to ride a bike, hop, or even stand on one foot tells us a lot about their brain.
These motor tasks rely on the cerebellum, a key brain structure for coordination and emotional regulation.
When the cerebellum is underactive:
❌ Poor balance
❌ Meltdowns
❌ Difficulty with attention
💡Activities like spinning (safely), laser therapy, and targeted movement may help. A chiropractor trained in paediatric neurology can observe your child’s balance, coordination, and posture during everyday movements like hopping or biking. These observations may offer clues about cerebellar function and overall neurological development. If concerns arise, your chiropractor will explain the findings clearly and may recommend gentle movement-based therapies or refer to other health professionals.

Unfortunately, another common cause of unsettled babies is mum's diet if breastfeeding
This includes
🐄 Food allergies including cow's milk protein (casein, not lactose), but also soy, egg, fish, nuts, gluten, and coconut
☕ Caffeine from coffee, strong tea, energy drinks, and soft drinks
We recommend that you start by removing caffeine, dairy, and soy from your diet if you are breastfeeding
It's hard to give up the coffee when you're getting so little sleep, but if it works, then you will both be more settled 🤍
Common signs we see from cow's milk allergies include cradle cap, eczema, vomiting, gagging, excessive drooling, gassiness, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, and frequent feeding

👶 It is so hard when they are unsettled
From experience in the clinic, we find the main causes to be
🐄 Mum's diet, including cow's milk protein or caffeine, if breastfeeding
👅 Tongue tie, making it harder to attach and causing your baby to take in excessive air
🤲 Tension
Over the next few posts in this series, we will offer some advice around each of these three common causes
💬 We see many concerned parents and carers, so please reach out for a chat if you'd like some support with an unsettled baby

What do nasal inflammation, picky eating, and speech delays have in common?
👉 Often, it’s microbial imbalance, in the nose, gut, or both.
Mould exposure and fungal toxins like ochratoxin A can impact brain receptors involved in language and mood.
💡Stool and urine testing + sinus detox + dietary shifts can support healing.

The face is a window to the brain. When children show no expression, flat affect, or weak facial tone, it may be a clue.
That tone reflects how the cranial nerves and brain stem are working.
🧠 Improving facial tone can unlock speech, emotional connection, and even laughter.
💡A chiropractor trained in paediatric care can observe facial tone and symmetry as part of a neurological assessment.
If concerns arise, your chiropractor will explain the findings clearly and may recommend gentle, age-appropriate therapies or refer to other health professionals.

Primitive reflexes are like the training wheels of the brain, and they help babies survive and grow.
If these reflexes stick around too long, they start to block learning, speech, movement, and self-regulation.
Common retained reflexes in non-verbal children:
🍼 Rooting (how they instinctively find the breast or bottle)
✋ Palmar (how they instinctively grip as a reflex)
🧠 ATNR (when a baby turns their head to one side, the arm and leg on that side extend, while the opposite limbs bend)
💡A chiropractor can perform gentle, age-appropriate neurological assessments to identify retained primitive reflexes. These assessments are observational and non-invasive, helping to guide care or referrals when needed. If reflexes are retained, your chiropractor may recommend movement-based exercises or collaborate with other health professionals to support integration.

We love to see babies at our family friendly chiropractic clinic 👶
A nappy blow-out is a common occurrence after their gentle chiropractic adjustment, especially in our unsettled, fussy babies with tummy pains.
We all remember how hectic life is with a newborn, and how foggy our baby brains can be at times.
Not to worry if you have forgotten your nappy bag at home, we have supplies at our baby changing station!
But it is running low. So we are happily accepting any nappy donations that your baby may have outgrown.
