Deep Earth Dreaming

Deep Earth Dreaming Experiential Deep Ecology ~ Plant Spirit Medicine ~ Grief Work ~ Nature Connection Here is Skye’s personal blog. To the lyrebirds, mushrooms and passionflowers.

Skye was raised on (and by) a farm on the edge of a wildlife reserve in South Africa. Her early childhood was spent wandering barefoot and immersed in the imaginal worlds that emerged between her senses and the touch of lion’s roar, river song and rolling thunderstorms across the bushveld. Her teen years were spent hand-raising and rehabilitating wildlife and later, led her to qualify as a wilderness guide. She then went on to train in traditional Taoist healing practices for three years and qualified as a yoga instructor before travelling to the Peruvian Amazon to undergo an in-depth apprenticeship in Amazonian curanderismo (the regional word for shaman/plant spirit healer). Helm also grew up close to nature but attempted to ‘civilise’ himself through higher education and a few years as a corporate lawyer. Through the good fortune of an existential crisis, he wound up in the jungle, where he met Skye and remembered what it felt like to belong to the world. Along the way, he trained as a counsellor, psycho-therapeutic journey practitioner, breath worker and in bodywork. Together, in Peru, we underwent a full-time 5year apprenticeship with Shipibo curanderos from the Mahua-Lopez lineage- simultaneously facilitating healing and transformational retreats for hundreds of people from all over the world. In the years since then, we have studied the sickness of modern industrial growth culture, and to the deep ecological movement arising in response, including the work of John Seed and Joanna Macy (The Work that Reconnects). We see our path as one which traverses the jagged terrain of separation, towards a culture of ‘interbeing’. To this end, we now apprentice themselves to the wild multi-form sentience of the land. To the humans that remember what it is to belong. To the old growth.

I'm excited to share that the next round of The Mythic Body course by Josh Schrei of The Emerald Podcast has just been released, with some key changes that will allow for more folks to join and to provide communal continuity beyond the initial year-long format that its had these last 4 years 💚

I've had the great joy and privilege of being a course assistant since its inception and a co-facilitator of the course material for the last two years alongside the amazing and .laece 🖤

This work has been so supportive to my own unfolding and has given me a framework, language and some very simple but potent practices to support the reclamation of animate ritual rhythms in my own life and within my larger community.

Josh shares generously, humbly and cares deeply for this work and its contribution to "a growing movement that seeks to reclaim connection to living land, to awe and wonder, and to the story of what it means to be a human being."

I feel a lot of love for this work and am honoured to be part of the team that is supporting it to move further out into the world 💚

John Seed Deep Ecology and I recently had a conversation with Nate Hagens from The Great Simplification podcast... we talk a lot about The Work The Reconnects/Experiential Deep Ecology, the body of work that John and Joanna Macy co-created.

It feels especially timely as Joanna's passing approaches. I hope that our responses have done justice to her incredible legacy.

I'd love to ear thoughts from anyone who gives it a listen 🖤🖤https://www.thegreatsimplification.com/episode/reality-roundtable-17

X6 Consecutive Fridays
9:30 am–2:30 pm
17th October – 21st November 2025

Kalorama | Warrandyte | Wild Location
Limited to 15 participants
~●~

Over six consecutive Fridays, we will gather to enter into a seasonal practice of deep listening and creative tending.

Each week's gathering will be shaped by ritual, song, mythic story, seasonal (spring) herbal medicine making, and tending to the wild thread of soul. Together, we form a living map of reconnection, working with hands, voice, heart, and soul.

We will sit in circle, share potluck meals, connect to our spring herbal allies, journal under the open sky, gather by the fire, and marinate in the medicine of being together in this way.

This journey is not in any way a peak experience that fades quickly.
It is the slow, simple yet profound work of living with soul daily.

Each day, a prayer for the re-membering of our ancestral inheritance,

our wild knowing, and our place in the great weaving of life.

Join me for a deep dive into this profound body of work by renowned master herbalist, earth poet, bardic naturalist, deep ecologist and prolific award-winning author of 25 books, the late Stephen Harrod Buhner. Stephen was a radical systems thinker, polymath and synthesiser whose work continues to have a deep and lasting impact on Plant People and Deep Ecologists all over the world.

I have read Plant Intelligence dozens of times (as well as most of his other books) and consider Stephen to be one of my primary teachers on the topics of Plant Medicine, Animist Living Earth Perception, Gaian Systems and Earth Sentience, Deep Ecology, and Eco-Soul Poetics.

According to Stephen, 'Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm' offers a "sophisticated theoretical foundation for contemplative animism." It provides an accessible philosophical framework combined with simple yet profound exercises to help us open our perception towards a living, breathing and dreaming earth. This will be my 6th time guiding this 10-week dive into his work.

"The world is alive, intelligent, aware, communicative, and filled with soul. We are not alone, we are part of something much larger than ourselves. We are companioned by millions upon millions of related life-forms; and the dead, mechanical world we have been taught about in school does not exist....
and never has."

I'm looking forward to participating in this webinar on Deep Ecology alongside John Seed Deep Ecology and Michelle Maloney from the Australian Earth Laws Alliance 💚

Event description:

You're invited to join us for monthly webinars in our series “Kinship: exploring human-nature connections.” Guest speakers from around Australia and around the world, will share their insights into how they connect with and celebrate ‘nature’. Human beings are (of course) part of nature, but by reflecting on the cultural, bioregional, linguistic and practical ways that humans engage with, celebrate and care for ‘nature’, we can enrich our understanding of what it means to be part of the Earth community.

In March we are delighted to have John Seed and Skye Cielita Flor join us, to share insights into deep ecology, and how the many and varied practices that have emerged within deep ecology can help people understand and connect with the non-human living world.

Series one: Attending to the More-Than-Human World

This first series, Attending to the More-Than-Human World, explores the ethics of attention –why it matters when we unhook our minds and attention from human privilege and ground in the perspectives of Animals, Plants, Rivers, Seas, Forests. Six incisive thinkers discuss ways to pay deep and loving attention to Animals and Plants. Through various approaches – empathy, shared embodiment, animism and holism – they offer thoughtful and practical guidance on how the well-being and self-determination of our fellow earth-beings can be supported and revitalized.

Skye Cielita Flor will be joining us on March 14th to share on the topic of:

I absolutely loved having this conversation with my friend and fellow herbalist Stephanie Hazel on The Elder Tree podcast 💚 we have both been really inspired by Stephen Harrod Buhner and felt to share our love of his life's work through this episode. Would love to hear your thoughts if you get a chance to listen. I'll share a link to the episode in the comments below 👇

“A powerful and intriguing tribute to Earth Poet, Animist and Herbalist Stephen Harrod Buhner, featuring the magnificent Skye Cielita Flor. In this episode, Stephanie and Skye discuss the potency of SHB’s works, their impact on their own lives and teaching styles, and break some of the key points he covers in his book ‘Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realms’.

Stephen Harrod Buhner offers a unique approach to understanding the relationship between humans and the natural world, highlighting the importance of integrating rationalist perspectives with mystical animist practices. Stephanie and Skye discuss sensory gating, how we develop the ability to sense and feel the natural world without psychedelics, and the crucial bridge between science and mysticism that SHB offers us: Eco-Animism, or Bio-Animism".

I’m feeling overjoyed to share this wonderful conversation I shared with John Seed Deep Ecology on one of my favourite podcasts Embodiment Matters 💚 Carl and Erin are long time inspirations of mine and I am fortunate to have received their wisdom pretty much weekly for nearly two years when they co-facilitated in Francis Weller’s “Soul Convivium” and then again during his 5 month “Grief Ritual Training”.

I added a link to this conversation to Linktree in my bio. Would love to hear your thoughts if you get a chance to listen.

“Friends, we are delighted to share this conversation with two beautiful Earth-loving humans, John Seed and Skye Cielita Flor.

John is a long-time Earth activist, writer, teacher, musician, who, along side Joanna Macy, helped to grow the body of work called Experiential Deep Ecology or The Work that Reconnects.

Skye is a teacher, folk herbalist, plant medicine ritualist, mama, and friend with whom we have connected for several years in online spaces with Francis Weller, Bayo Akomolafe and Josh Schrei.

In our conversation, we talk about the origins of deep ecology ecology work, we speak of ways to de-center the human, and the practices that help to reconnect us with the living intelligence of the Earth. We speak of the challenges of parenting in these times, along with the difficulties of doing this kind of soul work in what John calls “the religion of economics.”

It is a rich and deep conversation with wisdom holders from different generations who hold such beautiful respect for each other’s wisdom and insight, and such deep love for the Earth and life.

We hope you enjoy the conversation!

NATURE!
We are surrounded and embraced by her: powerless to separate ourselves from her, and powerless to pe*****te beyond her.

Without asking or warning, she snatches us up into her circling dance, and whirls us on until we are tired and drop from her arms.

She is ever shaping new forms: what is, has never yet been; what has been, comes not again. Everything is new, and yet nought but the old.

We live in her midst and know her not. She is incessantly speaking to us, but betrays not her secret. We constantly act upon her, and yet have no power over her.

The one thing she seems to aim at is individuality; yet she cares nothing for individuals. She is always building up and destroying; but her workshop is inaccessible.

Her life is in her children; but where is the mother? She is the only artist, working up the most uniform material into utter opposites, arriving without a trace of effort at perfection, at the most exact precision, though always veiled under a certain softness.

Each of her works has an essence of its own; each of her phenomena a special characterisation; and yet their diversity is in unity.

She performs a play; we know not whether she sees it herself, and yet she acts for us, the lookers-on.

Incessant life, development, and movement are in her, but she advances not. She changes forever and ever, and rests not a moment. Quietude is inconceivable to her, and she has laid her curse upon rest. She is firm. Her steps are measured, her exceptions rare, her laws unchangeable.

She has always thought and always thinks; though not as a man, but as Nature. She broods over an all-comprehending idea, which no searching can find out.

Mankind dwell in her and she in them. With all men she plays a game for love, and rejoices the more they win. With many, her moves are so hidden, that the game is over before they know it.

That which is most unnatural is still Nature; the stupidest philistinism has a touch of her genius. Whoso cannot see her everywhere, sees her nowhere rightly.

She loves herself, and her innumberable eyes and affections are fixed upon herself. She has divided herself that she may be her own delight. She causes an endless succession of new capacities for enjoyment to spring up, that her insatiable sympathy may be assuaged.

She rejoices in illusion. Whoso destroys it in himself and others, him she punishes with the sternest tyranny. Whoso follows her in faith, him she takes as a child to her bosom.

Her children are numberless. To none is she altogether miserly; but she has her favorites, on whom she squanders much, and for whom she makes great sacrifices. Over greatness she spreads her shield.

She tosses her creatures out of nothingness, and tells them not whence they came, nor whither they go. It is their business to run; she knows the road.

Her mechanism has few springs, but they never wear out, are always active and manifold.

The spectacle of Nature is always new, for she is always renewing the spectators. Life is her most exquisite invention; and death is her expert contrivance to get plenty of life.

She wraps man in darkness, and makes him forever long for light. She creates him dependent upon the earth, dull and heavy; and yet is always shaking him until he attempts to soar above it.

She creates needs because she loves action. Wondrous that she produces all this action so easily. Every need is a benefit, swiftly satisfied, swiftly renewed—every fresh want is a new source of pleasure, but she soon reaches an equilibrium.

Every instant she commences an immense journey, and every instant she has reached her goal.

She is vanity of vanities; but not to us, to whom she has made herself of the greatest importance. She allows every child to play tricks with her, every fool to have judgment upon her, thousands to walk stupidly over her and see nothing, and takes her pleasure and finds her account in them all.

We obey her laws even when we rebel against them; we work with her even when we desire to work against her.

She makes every gift a benefit by causing us to want it. She delays, that we may desire her; she hastens, that we may not weary of her.

She has neither language nor discourse, but she creates tongues and hearts by which she feels and speaks.

Her crown is love. Through love alone dare we come near her. She separates all existences, and all tend to intermingle. She has isolated all things in order that all may approach one another. She holds a couple of drafts from the cup of love to be fair payment for the pains of a lifetime.

She is all things. She rewards herself and punishes herself; is her own joy and her own misery. She is rough and tender, lovely and hateful, powerless and omnipotent. She is an eternal present. Past and future are unknown to her. The present is her eternity. She is beneficient. I praise her and all her works. She is silent and wise.

No explanation is wrung from her; no present won from her, which she does not give freely. She is cunning, but for good ends; and it is best not to notice her tricks.

She is complete, but never finished. As she works now, so can she always work. Everyone sees her in his own fashion. She hides under a thousand names and phrases, and is always the same. She has brought me here and will also lead me away. I trust her. She may scold me, but she will not hate her work. It was not I who spoke of her. No! What is false and what is true, she has spoken it all. The fault, the merit is all hers.
