“Vaccines have protected Australians for many years, and the flu vaccine remains one of our best tools to keep ourselves and our community safe.”

This year’s World Immunisation Week (24-30 April) theme is “For every generation, vaccines work”.

As the weather gets colder, flu (influenza) spreads more easily in the community. A/Prof Steven Guy, Clinical Director of Infectious Diseases & Infection Prevention and Control, shares a reminder to get vaccinated this season.

“When more people in the community are vaccinated, it helps slow the spread of the flu. This protects those who are most vulnerable, including babies, older Australians, and people with weakened immune systems who may not respond as strongly to vaccines.”

Those aged 75 years and older will be able to receive their RSV vaccines starting mid-May.

Being a volunteer saved Mary's life.

Mary is a Welcome Ambassador and dedicated volunteer at Eastern Health, but her connection runs much deeper.

Having faced her own health challenges, including bladder surgery and treatment for a heart murmur, which was picked up thanks to her time volunteering for Junior Doctors, Mary experienced the life‑changing care of Eastern Health firsthand.

Add to that the joy of welcoming four of her five children through our hospitals, it’s clear why Eastern Health holds a special place in her heart.

Today, Mary gives back through her volunteering work, by donating annually and has even included Eastern Health in her and her husband’s will.

Her story is a powerful reminder of how care, compassion and community create lasting bonds.

Thank you, Mary, for everything you do.

Fostering a neuro-affirming environment

Arlene and Megan are senior speech pathologists in Infant, Child, Youth Mental Health Service (ICYMHS) at Eastern Health.

Having identified the need for neuro-affirming resources for young people, Megan pitched the idea to the CareXperience Tanks in 2025 and the team was awarded with funds to purchase neuro-affirming books for children, adolescents and young people.

The books have been spread across five different ICHYMS sites and used as a tool during sessions to explain concepts around neuro diversity in a welcoming and age-appropriate way.

The CareXperience Tanks have been funded through generous donations to the Eastern Health Foundation.

With over 30 years of experience in the pathology field, Jo Wiid, Program Director of Pathology has spent the past four years leading the operational and scientific functions of the three laboratory sites of Eastern Health and its collection Centres.

“One of the biggest challenges is the rate of change in pathology, but it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”

In her role as Program Director of Pathology, Jo oversees a rapidly evolving environment shaped by new technology and testing methods. Her team’s focus is staying ahead of advancements, ensuring staff capability, and maintaining high-quality, timely results.

“Pathology is involved in 70% of all healthcare decisions, every cancer diagnosis comes through our labs.”

Recently, Jo successfully led the team through a NATA accreditation assessment, receiving outstanding feedback, particularly regarding staff collaboration and openness to improvement.

Eastern Health is honoured to partner with Worawa Aboriginal Girls College, where students created artwork now featured on scrubs worn by staff across our services.

Eastern Health staff voted on the designs, and we congratulate the winner, Worawa student Juran, for the beautiful artwork. The scrubs reflect powerful stories of culture, strength, identity and belonging, and support cultural safety in our clinical spaces.

We’re incredibly proud to see this meaningful partnership come to life, with culture, identity and storytelling reflected so strongly across our services.

These scrubs are more than a uniform, they represent connection, respect and a shared commitment to culturally safe care across our community.

“To see clients from where they started, to get to the end, is so very special.”

Maryanne is an Administration Assistant at Turning Point. Turning Point is Australia’s leading national addiction treatment, training and research centre.

Often the first point of contact for clients seeking help, Maryanne shares the importance of offering kindness to the clients she meets every day.

“When our clients come through the front door, I know it's very difficult for them to make that first step.

So by making them feel welcome and acknowledging their courage, that they’ve done well in making that initial step through the door, is important.”

Maryanne has done a range of different roles at Eastern Health. From starting her job as a 16-year-old as a clerk in medical records, she ventured around IVF clinics, medical legal team, emergency department, and landed in her current role at Turning Point.

She has accumulated an outstanding 47 years of experience at Eastern Health.

“I've had an amazing journey here at Eastern Health, and I've loved every moment of it.”
