Eastern Health has recently launched three plans; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Framework and Plan, Diversity Action Plan and Disability Action Plan.

“The whole idea is to ensure that we provide care that is safer and better for everyone.” Anshu explained.

In partnership with our communities, we strive to create a culturally safe and inclusive environment that recognises, responds to, and supports the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and needs of both our consumers and workforce.

Creating culturally safe wards

Six beautiful paintings by local Woiwurrung and Yorta Yorta artist Simone Thomson, now grace the walls of the Renal, Acute Dialysis and Vascular Surgery Unit at Eastern Health Box Hill.

The initiative, led by Nurse Unit Manager Libby Teiwes, was born from a vision to create a more culturally safe and welcoming environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers and families. With support from the Closing the Health Gap Committee, the artworks were selected and installed as a visible and meaningful acknowledgement of First Nations culture.

The purchase of the works was made possible thanks to a generous and anonymous donation to the Eastern Health Foundation.

Eastern Health is proud to be celebrating NAIDOC Week 2025 (6–13 July).

At Eastern Health, we are committed to engaging and collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the spirit of reconciliation.

Guided by our values, we continue to work together to advance health equity and incorporate cultural safety in our organisation.

We pay our respects to Elders past and present and acknowledge the next generation of leaders whose strength and vision contribute to shaping the future for Indigenous voices.

Celebrating 50 years of NAIDOC Week, we reflect on the strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, the vision of communities, and the legacy that guides the community forward.

This year’s theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’, honours the enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and celebrates the emerging leaders shaping our shared future.

We recognise that health and wellbeing are deeply connected to culture, Country, and Indigenous identity.

By listening and acting with respect, we strive to create a culturally safe and inclusive health system for all.
