COMMON FAQ: Are moles cancerous? How to tell if it’s cancer.

Quick answer: It depends on what you mean by “mole” 😵‍💫

Most of our patients think of a coloured or raised spot on their skin as a mole, so this means that yes, some “moles” actually are skin cancers.

So if we consider a mole to be a spot or lump on the surface of the skin, very few moles are skin cancers and generally they are a benign lesion (e.g. mole, skin tag, freckle).

Whilst common moles and other non-cancer skin lesions don’t usually turn into skin cancers, one exception to this is solar keratoses (actinic keratoses), which can sometimes progress to squamous cell skin cancer.

Any given mole has minimal risk of being a skin cancer, and it pays to get regular skin checks.

COMMON FAQ: What are the options for removing freckles?

Freckles appear when the skin produces pigmentation in response to ultraviolet light. With increasing age and sun exposure, larger and darker freckles appear. These are often called “age spots”, “liver spots” or “sun spots”. We're often asked by our patients how we can fade or remove freckles completely.

The good news is that there are many options available including:
👉 Laser freckle removal
👉 IPL laser treatment
👉 BBL laser treatment
👉 Cryotherapy
👉 Retinoids
👉 Chemical peels/photodynamic therapy

KNOW YOUR FACTS: Most skin cancers start by affecting just the top part of the skin. Unsure of the effectiveness and side effects of non-surgical treatments for non-melanoma skin cancers?

Some early skin cancers affect only the top layers of the skin. Although they can be removed surgically, there are other methods of treatment which may offer advantages such as less scarring or expense.

COMMON FAQ: What is the difference between BBL and laser 💫 for the face?

BBL (broad band light) and laser are both light-based treatments that are used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face.

👉 BBL is a good general treatment for a large area of skin, allowing the therapy of multiple skin concerns in one session.

👉 Laser tends to be more intense and is used for individual lesions of concern.

There are some key differences between the two treatments and the best treatment option will depend on your specific skin concerns and goals. Our experienced healthcare team includes doctors and registered nurses who are expertly trained in determining which treatment option is best suited to your needs.

Thinking of investing in a beach shelter this summer. With all the options out there, where do you start? 🏖️

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Shelters designed to offer maximum UV protection – look for a UVE (ultraviolet effectiveness) rating of UPF50+.

UMBRELLAS: Umbrellas are quick to set up but provide limited protection from UV. Plus, they only provide shade from above, so you'll need to keep adjusting it.

POPUP BEACH TENTS: Lightweight UPF50+ polyester with inbuilt, flexible frames that take (most of) the faff out of tent installation. Set-up is quick and the zip-up walls give you some degree of privacy whilst a built-in floor means you don't get sand everywhere. They can be a little tricky to dismantle but overall a great option.

CABANAS: Square-shaped shelters with four legs (which have sandbags to secure them to the ground), a central pole to stake into the sand and a roof. Cabanas can be very lightweight and easy to carry. Some styles can be set up in different ways, depending on what kind of shade you want. Once packed, a canopy doesn't take up too much room, so you can keep it in the car ready to go. But once you've set up your canopy, it can take up a large area, so it's not ideal on a crowded beach. They are usually UPF50+, but always check.

SKIN CANCER PREVENTION: Do you have a history of solar keratoses or basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma?

You can easily reduce your risk of future skin cancers 🔆 by up to 30% with Vitamin B3 (nicotinamide). It's a safe and inexpensive supplement that is now considered a standard part of the ongoing management of basal and squamous cell carcinomas.

Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world. That's why melanoma is often referred to as ‘Australia’s national cancer’.

Unless your risk is very low, or you have recently had a full body skin check, we normally recommend you have a full body skin check by an accredited skin cancer doctor.
