Talking to Kids About Cancer

It’s hard—but honesty helps.

Children notice changes—your mood, routines, and whispers behind doors. While your first instinct might be to protect them from the truth, keeping it a secret can leave them confused or anxious.

Here’s how to help them cope:

Be honest and age-appropriate
Share how you feel to show it’s okay to express emotions
Reassure them that they’re loved and cared for
Keep talking—check in often and answer their questions

You can’t protect them from every hard feeling, but you can walk through it together.
