Talk about a dream team 🤩

We headed out to Sandringham Dragons training last night to celebrate our new partnership with the AFL, an exciting collaboration that will connect thousands of young people with our innovative digital mental health platform, MOST.

By connecting with the AFL Play community, MOST will support players off field for “everything in between”, whether it be stress or challenges from school, football, work or life, providing direct access to a live chat with a qualified mental health practitioner to support overall mental fitness.

First rolled out through the AFL Talent Pathways program last year, MOST has reached more than 2,000 players in the Talent pathways, with Talent League Wellbeing Coordinators already embedding MOST into the dedicated wellbeing curriculum.

Today marks the start of for 2026.

Recognising our individual – and shared – commitment to advance self-determination, justice and health equity for First Nations communities has never been more essential.

This year's theme, 'All In', is a call to action for the role we can all play in paving the way towards genuine progress: in our workplaces, local communities, and broader society.

Here, members of the Orygen team and our Cultural Strengthening Committee reflect on what this important week and 'All In' means to them.

We've spent the week working alongside global health leaders at our first World Health Assembly as host of World Health Organization (WHO)'s designated Collaborating Centre for Young People's Mental Health.

The week focused on global collaboration to explore the drivers of mental ill-health, understand gaps in research and systems, and advance action.

"As the WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said of health worldwide, we have reached a fork in the road, and that is particularly true when it comes to youth mental health," Prof. Pat McGorry said.

"Either we tackle this now or we will see increasingly negative outcomes for future generations around the world."

Orygen is proud and excited to introduce our 2026-28 Lived Experience Strategy.

Drawing on Orygen's history of lived experience involvement, as well as consultation, engagement and insight from our lived experience workforce and advisory groups, it sets out our organisational commitment – and a clear path – to build, strengthen and champion lived experience as a core part of our work and the field of youth mental health more broadly.

As articulated by our Head of Lived Experience, Rafi Armanto: "Now the real work begins, to recognise this commitment to the workforce but also to young people and their families."

Too often, young people experiencing schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are excluded from conversations about research, treatment and care.

This World Schizophrenia Awareness Day, Orygen's Prof. Andy Thompson reflects on why meaningful inclusion is so essential to shaping improved outcomes for young people and fast-tracking progress for future generations.

When young people and their families are involved in study design, research and resource development, outcomes are more likely to reflect real questions, real concerns, and better support shared decision-making.

That's the thinking behind a recently co-developed resource on Clozapine, designed to guide young people through what to expect when considering this medication in ways that feel clearer and more accessible: https://bit.ly/4tSfN54

As young people grow up in a digital world, experts agree we need more research into the impacts on mental health – but how should this be prioritised?

That was the central question answered by Orygen's latest report – Digital Environments and Youth Mental Health – which brought together young people and experts to agree on a global research agenda and a coordinated way forward.

"We know digital environments like social media, gaming platforms and generative AI can offer important opportunities for connection, learning and help-seeking, but also have potential to negatively impact young people's health and wellbeing," lead author Dr Louise La Sala said.

"We worked together to address how the international community can undertake research into this vital topic that is coordinated, rigorous, globally relevant and translated into action – because that's what we urgently need.

"This report offers a clear set of priorities for the global research community to focus on as we work to better respond to the rapidly evolving world young people are growing up in."

Just announced at the World Health Assembly in Geneva.

A milestone moment for us, WHO and, most importantly, youth mental health globally.

"This designation is part of growing momentum nationally and globally, which empowers us to step up our practical work across the world, improving systems, services and outcomes for young people, not only in high resource settings, but also in low- and middle-resource settings," Orygen Executive Director Prof. Patrick McGorry said.
