Orygen is the world’s leading research and knowledge translation organisation focusing on mental ill-health in young people. At Orygen, our leadership and staff work to deliver cutting-edge research, policy development, innovative clinical services, and evidence-based training and education to ensure that there is continuous improvement in the treatments and care provided to young people experiencing mental ill-health. Our work has created a new, more positive approach to the prevention and treatment of mental disorders, and has developed new models of care for young people with emerging disorders. This work has been translated into a worldwide shift in services and treatments to include a primary focus on getting well and staying well, and health care models that include partnership with young people and families. Research shows that employment helps young people with mental ill-health to get well and stay well.

So, what if there was a way for young people to build their skills and prepare for the realities of work in a safe, controlled environment?

A new program developed by Orygen and supported by the TAL Community Foundation is making that possible – all from inside a VR headset.

Excitingly, VR4VR (Virtual Reality for Vocational Recovery) has launched at Veritas House in Orange, will soon be available at Youth Focus in Perth, and is on track to help about 20 young people in a pilot trial by the end of 2025 🙌

Mental ill-health in young men is increasing, but rigid notions of manhood prevent men from seeking help, and a lack of tailored support is not meeting their needs when they do.

These are some of the key findings from a new Orygen report, which details an 11-point policy plan that sets out practical steps to improve mental health outcomes for young men.

It comes as new survey data of almost 800 young men shows that 76% felt that mental health outcomes could improve if supports were more tailored to them.

Family peer workers, who have lived experience of caring for a family member with mental ill-health, play an essential role in offering practical and emotional support to those facing similar challenges.

The value and importance of this support is the focus of a new paper led by Orygen, which argues that improvements in research, policy and practice are needed to strengthen the field.

Inspiring to be at Parliament House in Canberra today to help amplify Ending Loneliness Together's new research into youth loneliness.

Orygen Youth Advisory Council member Lea Gabriel and Executive Director Prof. Patrick McGorry joined panel discussions to unpack the findings, which reveal that an alarming 43% of 15 to 25-year-olds in Australia are lonely.

We were pleased to contribute to Ending Loneliness Together's call for a coordinated national response to youth loneliness, and for Lea and Pat's perspectives to form part of such important conversations.
