Emergency Care for Back Pain

Did you know that 81% of people who called an ambulance for back pain were transported to an emergency department, and around 70% of those patients were given opioids?

Back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, yet people are increasingly seeking care from emergency services when community-based options like chiropractic could safely support them.

Dr Simon Vella's research, published in The Lancet Rheumatology, explores why this happens, the cost to the health system, and where chiropractors can step in to make a real difference.

This is a must-read for anyone passionate about the future of MSK care in Australia.

One of the best things about being a CA member? Access to events like this. πŸ”₯

CA members get exclusive access to CARF Knowledge Translation (CARF-KT) sessions β€” where leading researchers translate the latest evidence into practical, ready-to-use clinical strategies. No overwhelm. Just clear, actionable insights you can apply immediately.

And the next session is one you won't want to miss.

Turning Up the Heat: Translating Evidence into Practice for Low Back Pain

Low back pain is one of the most common presentations in chiropractic, yet heat therapy remains one of the most underutilised tools in the toolkit.

In this session, Dr Peter McCann brings over 30 years of MSK and LBP clinical experience, combined with his recently completed Master of Research focused specifically on superficial heat, to give you clear, evidence-based strategies you can apply straight away.

You'll walk away knowing:

πŸ”₯ When, how, and for whom is heat therapy appropriate in multimodal LBP care
πŸ”₯ How to select modalities, dosing strategies, and patient education approaches
πŸ”₯ How to close the gap between current practice and best evidence

Event Details πŸ“… Live online - interactive format ⏱ 1 hour CPD πŸŽ₯ Recording available on CA+ if you can't attend live

The 2026–27 Federal Budget is in. Here's what it means for chiropractic β€” and where we'll be pushing for more.

β†’ DVA fees will increase from 1st July 2027. A genuine win for practitioners treating veterans.

β†’ The treatment cycle model and the need to obtain a general practitioner referral will end on 1 July 2027. A revised fee schedule for allied health providers β€” including chiropractors β€” takes effect from the same date, alongside a new annual monetary limit of $5,000 per veteran for allied health services.

β†’ A consultation process will take place before July 2027. Chiropractic Australia will be at the table β€” and we'll be calling on members to help shape our advocacy. Watch this space.

β†’ The $20,000 instant asset write-off is now permanent from 1 July 2026. Real planning certainty for practice owners considering investment.

β†’ Loss carryback returns from 2026–27. Worth a conversation with your accountant if your practice incurred losses.

β†’ Medicare Urgent Care Clinics will be permanently funded and expanded. We welcome the pressure this takes off hospital emergency departments β€” and we'll be seeking clarity on how chiropractors can contribute to multidisciplinary care teams within these clinics.

Our profession has a role to play in every one of these reforms.

We're excited to announce that Chiropractic Connected returns in 2026 – reimagined as the Clinical Skills Symposium.

πŸ“… Saturday 10 – Sunday 11 October 2026 | Melbourne

This evolution reflects a sharper focus on what chiropractors tell us they need most: practical, immediately applicable skills and evidence-informed approaches they can implement in practice from day one.

The two-day symposium will bring together chiropractors at every stage of their careers for the following:

β€’ Applied clinical skills development
β€’ Contemporary and evidence-informed practice approaches
β€’ Patient communication and outcomes
β€’ Peer learning and professional networking
β€’ High-value CPD in a focused environment

Delegates will also receive complimentary access to CARF Researchers' Day 2026 on Friday, 9 October (valued at $180), which connects clinicians directly with the researchers shaping the future of chiropractic practice.

Today is WHO Move for Health Day - a global reminder that movement is medicine. 🌍

The World Health Organisation recognises physical activity as one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent noncommunicable diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

At Chiropractic Australia, we believe every Australian deserves to move freely and without pain. Our members work every day to support patients in reducing musculoskeletal barriers to movement, because when your body moves well, you can live well.

This Move for Health Day, ask yourself: what's stopping you from moving more? ' If pain or injury is part of your answer, a chiropractor can help. βœ…
