Important Update: Reduced Timeframe for Submitting Bulk Billed Medicare Claims

From 5 September 2025, the timeframe for submitting bulk billed Medicare claims has been reduced from two years to one year.

This change was announced as part of the Australian Government’s 2024–25 Budget and has been enacted through amendments to the Health Insurance Act 1973 and the Dental Benefits Act 2008. The change aims to strengthen the integrity of the Medicare system.

What’s Changing?
-Bulk billed services provided on or after 5 September 2025 – must be claimed within 1 year from the date of service.
-Bulk billed services provided before 5 September 2025 – can still be claimed within the current 2-year timeframe.
-Existing provisions for late lodgement applications remain unchanged.

Who Does This Affect?
-This applies to all bulk billed Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) services, whether submitted electronically or on paper.
-For patients, there is no impact – they will continue to face no out-of-pocket costs for bulk billed services.
-For providers, the impact is expected to be minimal, as most claims are already submitted within one year.
