About
Australia’s complex aged care system is challenging. Add to this the social stigma that needing aged care means you’re ‘not coping’, and the stress and overwhelm felt by families as they waste precious time trying to navigate the system and make objective decisions. It’s no wonder many wait until they’re in crisis, settle for less than they need, or just give up. I experienced the problem firsthand as a carer for my Nanna, after she was diagnosed with cancer. Being unable to get the right information or speak to a person instead of an online system, and the countless hours spent making calls and referrals, was incredibly frustrating – and I had more advantages than most being a healthcare professional! Speaking as an expert witness at the Aged Care Royal Commission in 2019 gave me an incredible opportunity to share my experience and give older people a voice. But I also knew the impact I could make at grass roots level by drawing on my personal experience, industry knowledge and network of contacts, to help keep families at home and together. I want older people like my Nanna to have an ADVOCATE. Someone who will strive to help them enjoy their best possible life, with a holistic home care solution that: • SUPPORTS their physical, emotional, social and health needs • RELIEVES the burden on carers and families trying to navigate home care options It’s about the whole person. Their values and wishes. Not just which nursing home is available. This is why I created Empower Aged Care Consulting. My service has 3 key steps: • Face to face: I sit down with older people, their families and carers in their homes and talk through every aspect of their situation. I help them understand their options and the services available, pinpoint what’s needed, and design a plan. • Implementation: I roll out the plan, from start to finish., phone calls, bookings, paperwork, referrals to My Aged Care, communications with GPs – all taken care of. • Follow up: I check every aspect of what’s been implemented to make sure it’s going smoothly and make any adjustments.
Alternate supports: 1. Case management 2. Completion of My Aged Care referrals on your behalf I believe older people, carers and families deserve more. More human contact. More support. They deserve to enjoy their independence and wellbeing and remain at home longer. And I believe that with a personalised, holistic home care plan, this is absolutely achievable. Have questions?
