Parkinson’s often whispers before it shouts. For many people, the earliest clues are not tremor, they’re non-movement symptoms that can show up years before the more recognisable motor signs.
Early signs that can be worth noting (especially if they’re new and persistent):
𝗥𝗘𝗠 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 (𝗥𝗕𝗗): vivid dreams with movements like shouting, punching, or kicking, often noticed by a sleep partner.
𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: can precede diagnosis by 10 to 20 years, especially meaningful when paired with other signs.
𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗹 (hyposmia/anosmia): often one of the earliest and most overlooked signs.
𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗮: handwriting becoming smaller and cramped, sometimes alongside subtle voice or movement changes.
𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱: depression/anxiety, fatigue, diffuse pain, reduced facial expression, reduced arm swing.
It’s important to remember that one symptom alone is not diagnostic, but clusters (especially RBD + smell loss + constipation, or plus family history) should prompt further evaluation.
