At ASMIRT 2026, attendees heard an engaging presentation by radiation therapist Tori Dwyer which looked at how “binge watching bad TV” might misrepresent experiences of oncology services and feed into the beliefs, anxieties and expectations patients and their families bring to their encounters with our professions.

Marie McInerney from Croakey - Informed, engaged communities for health covered this presentation that examined three television shows: Grey's Anatomy, House and New Amsterdam at this year's ASMIRT conference. A recent story on Channel 7 pointed to a loophole in the law governing the use of MRI as a diagnostic imaging tool. As per our joint position statement, the law currently allows non-radiographers, even admin staff, to undertake scans.

We clearly point out for the safety of patients and those operating MRIs, that only Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency - Ahpra registered radiographers should be allowed to use this highly complex and potentially fatal equipment. We are currently working with relevant parties to close this loophole now. Watch the video here: https://ow.ly/EX5Z50YMmNn

ASMIRT and the ISMRT (Australian National Chapter) seek to address a loophole in regulations that allow non-medical radiation practitioners....
