Advertising for gambling, alcohol and unhealthy foods is everywhere — in our social media feeds, during sport broadcasts and across public spaces like train stations. These are everyday environments where people should be able to go about their day without constant exposure to marketing for products that can harm health.

Because these ads are so widespread, they’re difficult to avoid.

That’s why the Give Us An Ad Break campaign is calling on the Federal Government to introduce clear national rules on how gambling, alcohol and unhealthy food products can be advertised.

At NNF, we’re proud to support this campaign and the push for environments that better support people’s health and wellbeing.

If you are a parent or caregiver of a child aged 0 to 5 or currently expecting, National Eating Disorders Collaboration invite you to complete a short nationwide online survey.

Your insights will help shape a national and collaborative approach to creating more eating disorder safe environments for children and families.

NNF is proud to have supported one of the working groups relating to this First 2000 Days Implementation Strategy and we look forward to the meaningful change that will come from this implementation strategy.

📣 NEDC is developing an Eating Disorder Safe First 2000 Days Implementation Strategy and we are inviting parents and caregivers across Australia to share their experiences.

What does this mean?

The First 2000 Days refers to the period from conception to age five. It is a time of rapid growth and development for children and an important and often challenging time for families.

Being Eating Disorder Safe is about supporting healthier and more supportive conversations and environments around food, bodies, minds and wellbeing, helping reduce eating disorder risk and harm.

How you can help 👉

If you are a parent or caregiver of a child aged 0 to 5 or currently expecting, we invite you to complete a short nationwide online survey. Your responses will help us understand what supports or challenges families face during the First 2000 Days.

Your insights will help shape a national and collaborative approach to creating more eating disorder safe environments for children and families.

We eat food for lots of reasons. Sometimes we’re hungry and need energy to play, learn and grow. Other times, food helps us celebrate, connect with our culture, and share special moments with family and friends.

Food gives our bodies what they need to run, think, grow strong, sleep well and feel good, especially when we enjoy a variety of foods!

Food brings us together and that’s something to celebrate! What foods make your celebrations special? 🎉

Imagine your own party and fill a Celebration Plate with your favourite foods. Download the activity sheet and draw or write your ideas!

🚨 Weekend activity incoming...

Ever wonder how an apple gets from the tree to your lunchbox? Or where crackers started before they land on your plate? Everything we eat has a story and it starts long before it reaches your plate.

Some foods grow in the ground, like crunchy carrots and juicy strawberries. Some grow on trees, just like sweet peaches and sour lemons. Some foods come from animals like eggs, milk or even honey. Some foods are made by mixing and baking in busy kitchens.

We’re delighted to welcome Martha to the NNF volunteer team as one of our all-rounders.

Martha brings a strong health background, originally qualifying as a nurse and currently working at the Royal Children’s Hospital. She has also completed her studies in nutrition and dietetics, driven by a long-standing ambition to work in public health nutrition. Through her studies, she developed a strong interest in the commercial determinants of health, the role of the food industry in shaping dietary patterns, and the impacts this has on health equity and children’s nutrition.

Martha was drawn to volunteering with NNF because of our work in public health nutrition and food policy.

Outside of volunteering, Martha is training for her second full marathon at the Gold Coast later this year and enjoys playing the piano in her downtime.

We’re so pleased to have you volunteering your time with us, Martha!

We’re excited to welcome three Master of Dietetics students from Deakin University who will be joining us for the next 7 weeks as part of their community placement.

During their time with us, they’ll be working on a project with Healthy Eating Advisory Service focused on understanding current food and nutrition education and mealtime practices in early childhood settings. This work will help inform the development of practical, evidence-based resources to better support educators.

We’re looking forward to supporting the next generation of dietitians as they contribute meaningful, practice-informed insights to strengthen early childhood food environments. Welcome to the team Ellie, Amy and Allison!

Ricky and Christina visited Deakin University earlier this week, where Ricky presented to the Masters of Dietetics cohort on the work of NNF and HEAS and how we support organisations to provide and promote healthier food and drink options across Australia.

The session unpacked the different settings dietitians may work in or alongside throughout their careers, highlighting how nutrition policy shows up in practice and how our services support implementation on the ground.

Ricky also shared her career journey, offering insights into the many pathways available in public health nutrition and the impact dietitians can have beyond one-to-one care.

We’re passionate about supporting the next generation of dietitians to feel confident navigating food policy, shaping healthy environments and driving meaningful change.
