Get to know our osteopath Logan Sharrock

1. What’s one thing you always try to help your patients understand about their body or movement?
That their body is capable of so much. I always say to patients that you see 80 year olds finishing marathons which is a great example of what our body can do at such an age. So if you have a goal, in most cases you can get there. The important factor I try to also reiterate with this is that you have to work at the pace your body can handle and the need to condition it over time. The older you get the more effort, time and conditioning you need, but that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve that goal, its more about changing your mindset around realistic exceptions rather than completely giving up on that goal.

2. How do you empower your patients to take an active role in their recovery?
By finding out and reiterating their goals, making sure that is a focus of why we are here.

3. What’s one small change you often recommend that makes a big difference in people’s wellbeing?
Listen to your body and remember that rest is just as important as being physically active. I find a lot of patients will continue to push through pain and push their bodies to breaking point as they perceive rest as weak or something that their body is somehow capable of not needing. They forget to listen to to the warning bell that the body is asking to recover. You need to find the balance that is right for you between a healthy push physically and rest.

4. What’s your favourite success story from working with a patient (without breaking confidentiality)?
I had an elderly patient, in her 70’s, and she had a decent fall whilst away on an overseas holiday. She came in many weeks later and was experiencing a lot of pain in multiple different areas of the body. To no surprise it was impacting her ability to sleep comfortably, getting up from the couch was painful, each step she could feel her hamstring, all the simple tasks you take for granted were now negatively impacted by her pain. As any normal person would she was worried about the long term impacts this may have especially with her age and the fall happening 6 weeks prior. Over the next 4-6 weeks we worked on reducing pain within the clinic and providing rehab to gain her strength back in her upper body and the hamstring that was evidently strained due to lack of activation on testing and the pain present. Every week she got better and better, making strides I wasn’t expecting to see from our first assessment and is now completely pain free. It's a simple success story but for the elderly I think they are more thankful and grateful as so much of their daily lives are impacted by pain and their ability to live independently becomes more difficult.

Get to know our osteopath Shaun Coghlan
1. What areas of professional development are you currently exploring?
I’m always exploring advanced manual therapy techniques and have also recently registered for the upcoming GLAD Back course to further expand my skills and knowledge.
2. Who or what has influenced your approach to osteopathy the most?
I’ve been fortunate to work with so many excellent osteopaths throughout my career, but our principal osteopath, Heath Williams, has had a particularly big influence. He’s been incredible for my development and continues to inspire excellence across the entire profession. Do you think this will earn me some brownie points with the boss? 😂
3. How do you stay up to date with the latest research or techniques in your field?
I’m lucky to have a teaching role at Victoria University, which keeps me engaged with the latest research and techniques. It’s a great way to stay on top of developments in the field while sharing knowledge with the next generation of osteopaths.
4. What motivates you to come to work each day?
The chance to help people feel better and improve their quality of life. Seeing patients make progress, big or small, is what makes coming to work so rewarding.
