These are herbs, too! 🌼

Those of you who have worked with me will know my love for raw herbs. You may have seen my imagery of the dried barks, roots, seeds, stems and flowers that we use in Chinese medicine. Those raw products are boiled into a decoction (tea) that is taken as medicine.

But what about those instances where you're travelling or you find yourself unable to cook up the raw herbs?

Herbal 👏 Granules 👏

Powdered or granulated herbs are a fantastic option to use when you still require a customisable formula, but you're on the go or away from the kitchen. Simply mix your prescribed amount of powder into half a glass of warm water - and it's ready to drink.

The best herbs for you are the herbs that are going to be able to fit into your lifestyle. So, if you've ever needed a custom formula but are worried that you won't have the time to cook raw herbs in the traditional method - this could be the option for you.

A glorious formula to support a patient experiencing peripheral neuropathy and low energy.

Often people who see me in the clinic don't have a textbook presentation of symptoms or a neatly defined condition. They might be experiencing multiple symptoms, in many different parts of the body.

👏 Every body is unique.
👏 Every prescription is too.

One of my favourite things about Chinese herbal medicine is how individualised it is. We draw from centuries of wisdom and then modify traditional formulas to perfectly fit the person presenting in front of us each day.

I feel pretty damn lucky to be doing the job I do. Pinch me! ✨

SHOULD I BRUSH MY TONGUE?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Chinese medicine practitioners are trained to interpret the appearence of the tongue, including the coating. We look to find a coating that is thin, white and moist.
• Coatings that are thick can indicate imbalances within the body that have been around for a prolonged period of time.
• Yellow or brown coatings can indicate heat imbalances within the body.
• White coatings that are thick can indicate a damp or cold condition.
• A lack of tongue coating all together can be a sign of fluids within the body drying up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Of course, we also see an unlimited amount of combination patterns which present over different regions on the tongue body.
With all this in mind, I suggest to avoid brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper for at least 24 hours before seeing your practitioner. Tongue coating gives us an immense amount of information about your health.
Swipe across for some pictures of different tongue coatings we see presenting in clinic 👀!

R U OK?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Check on your strong friend. Call your family. Drop in to see your neighbour who lives alone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is ok, to not be ok.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To start a conversation:
1. Ask are you OK?
2. Listen without judgement.
3. Encourage action.
4. Check in.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To anybody struggling, please know that you are supported and loved.

P U L S E D I A G N O S I S
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you visit a Chinese medicine practitioner, you can expect to be asked a whole host of questions about your health. In addition though, we also carry out ‘inspection’ (looking at the body for health indicators or signs of disharmony), and ‘palpation’ (using the hands to feel parts of the body).
One of THE most fundamental methods of palpation in Chinese medicine, is PULSE DIAGNOSIS.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pulse diagnosis requires the practitioner to feel the radial pulse, on both wrists, using 3 fingers.
Of course we are detecting basic health parameters you may be familiar with in a Western sense: pulse rate, regularity, strength etc.
However we are feeling for so much more than this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each finger placement correlates to a different organ system in Chinese medicine. Additionally, we feel for the strength and quality of the pulse at several different depths to ascertain the function of these systems. Us Chinese medicine practitioners have an entire vocabulary dedicated to describing the pulses we feel. Some examples are: slippery, wiry, thready, choppy, hesitant, weak, floating.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Using the Pulse diagnosis system along with listening, enquiry, and inspection; we form a complete view of your health so that we can accurately diagnose and effectively treat your health concerns.
How unique is that!? 🙌

I've had THE most fun hanging out at sharing the broth love with 🍜
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By now you've probably all heard about how AMAZING bone broth is for gut health. But did you know that bone broth is a total rockstar in the Chinese medicine space as well?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In Chinese medicine, bone broth is revered for "building blood".
When someone is said to have a blood deficiency, we are speaking to the QUALITY of their blood, and thus its ability to nourish organs and tissues within the body.
Some signs & symptoms of a Chinese medicine blood deficiency pattern include:
• fatigue
• muscle weakness
• brittle nails
• dry hair or increased hairfall
• dizziness
• palpitations
• insomnia
• pale complexion
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Consuming broths and soups made using the bones of organic animals deeply nourishes the blood. Considering that "Blood is the mother of Qi (energy)", it's no wonder that it helps return us to our natural vitality. 🤸‍♀️
