Today we remember the ANZAC soldiers and the sacrifice they made for our country. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember them.

📊 New research highlights an important challenge in medical weight management.
A large systematic review published in the BMJ found that after stopping weight-management medications, people regained weight at an average rate of ~0.4 kg per month, with many cardiometabolic improvements gradually returning to baseline within about 1.4 years.
While medications can be a helpful tool, the findings reinforce a key principle in obesity care: long-term weight management requires durable strategies and ongoing support.
For many people with obesity, metabolic and bariatric surgery can provide a more sustained approach to weight loss and improvement in obesity-related conditions such as:
• Type 2 diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Sleep apnoea
• High cholesterol
At our clinic, surgery is never a “quick fix.” It’s part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program that includes medical assessment, nutrition guidance, psychological support, and long-term follow-up to help patients achieve lasting results.
If you’re exploring your options for managing weight and improving your health, our team is here to guide you through evidence-based pathways that support long-term success.

What are the risks of having surgery?
All surgery involves some risk. Risks can be broken down into two groups, risks of surgery in general and risks specific to the operation being performed.
When assessing the risks of surgery you must also consider and balance the risks of not having the surgery and remaining significantly overweight.
These will be discussed in detail with you prior to the operation by your surgeon. Call us on 9760 2777 to make an appointment or book online at our website.

Surgery vs GLP-1 meds: what does the research say?

A new Nature Medicine study followed people with type 2 diabetes and obesity for almost 6 years, comparing metabolic (bariatric) surgery with GLP-1 medications.

They found that, compared to people who only took GLP-1 medications, people who had surgery had:
• Lower risk of death
• Fewer heart attacks and strokes
• Less kidney disease
• Less diabetes-related eye damage

👉 Bottom line:
GLP-1 meds can be a great tool, but this research shows that surgery still offers the strongest long-term protection against serious diabetes complications.

We don’t see this as surgery vs medication, it’s about finding the right option (or combination) for you.

⚠️ Important supplement update for our bariatric community ⚠️

The TGA has announced tighter regulations on vitamin B6 following a rise in toxicity cases linked to nerve damage and long-term neurological symptoms.

🗓️ From June 2027:
• Products with >50 mg B6 will require pharmacist supervision
• Products with >200 mg B6 will require a prescription
• Many high-dose supplements will be removed from shelves

Why this matters after bariatric surgery 👇
Vitamin B6 is commonly found in multivitamins, protein shakes, energy drinks, and weight-loss products. Many people have been unknowingly exposed to B6 from multiple sources, leading to serious harm.

We strongly encourage:
✔️ Checking with our dietitian before changing supplements or starting new supplements
✔️ Avoiding high-dose B vitamins or taking the same ingredient twice
✔️ Checking all supplement labels
✔️ Seeking medical advice if you experience tingling, burning, numbness or weakness in hands or feet

If you’re unsure about your supplements, please make an appointment with our dietitian.
