Hello our awesome Northcotian community!

We are closing today for our Christmas break to spend some much needed quality down time with friends and families.
We will be back on the 2nd of January!

From all of us here at Northcote Medical, we wish you all a super duper happy, relaxing, festive and most of all safe Christmas and we’ll see you on the flip side when we’re all living off leftovers with big fat belly aches from too much pudding!

Look, we know we say this every year around this time, but we think it’s a pretty important message.

We get it. It’s the silly season. The party season. Time to wind down. But we love you Northcote, and we care about you.
Did you know that a high booze intake can have a negative impact on your physical and mental health, your work, your finances and your community - and these effects can be short and long term? We’re not saying you can’t let your hair down occasionally, but we are saying: everything in moderation peeps.

If you are going to partake this season, make sure to plan a few alcohol free days each week. Make sure you eat. Make sure you pour your own drinks so that you can keep an eye on your intake. And drink plenty of water and non alcoholic drinks to stay hydrated.
Remember: how much alcohol impacts your health depends on your age, your health status, your biological s*x, and what other drugs and medications you take as well as how often and how much you consume.

This time of year isn’t all fun and games for everyone.

The constant expectation of parties and social engagements, plus the extraordinary amount of extra people in public spaces can have a huge impact on some people.

Do you suffer from Social Anxiety?
You’re not alone, trust us, and there are a few things you can do to help ease the anxiety at this time of the year.

Practise your relaxation or breathing techniques before the social event.
Be selective and only attend social situations in which you’ll feel safe - it’s ok to say no, or offer alternative one on one catch ups with the people who matter.
Think about who will be there and plan what you might say to them before you go.
Resist the urge to use substances to help you cope, in the long run, booze and drugs will probably only make your anxiety worse.

Struggling with social anxiety, and feel like you need a little more help? Book in for a chat at Northcote Medical via the HotDoc app or give us a call on 9489 6472. Or use the numbers below.

The first Friday of the month is FUN FACT FRIDAY!

YAAAAYYYY!!!

Did you know that you spend about 10% of your awake time every day with your eyes closed?

That seems like a blinking lot! In fact, you blink about 13,500 times a day!

Blinking is super important for your eye health because it not only helps to keep your eyeballs lubricated by spreading tears, but helps to remove things like dust, dead skin cells and dirt from your eyes!

Well I’ll be blinked!

Please note we have reached our capacity for accepting new patients who need stimulant medications for ADHD management.
Due to regulatory requirements, only one GP can hold a prescription permit at a time, taking on more patients could affect the level of care we provide to those already under our care.
We understand this may be frustrating and are truly sorry for any inconvenience.
We greatly appreciate your understanding and patience as we continue to prioritise the well-being of all our patients.

Menopause is defined as having occurred when 12 months has passed since the last menstrual period. The lead up to menopause can last up to 10 years (sometimes longer, but averaging 4 to 6 years) and is referred to as “perimenopause”.
This is basically the time where the ovaries start to run out of eggs to release every month, leading to a decrease in female s*x hormones - the most commonly known being oestrogen. The drop, or fluctuations in the female s*x hormones cause the stereotypical symptoms of menopause: “hot flushes” and “mood swings”.

But perimenopause is so much more than that.
The change in oestrogen levels within the body also impacts bone health, heart health, brain health, s*xual function - the list of symptoms of perimenopause and menopause is huge - too long for one insta post!

It might seem logical but it’s often ignored that 100% of people who are born with ovaries will go through perimenopause and then menopause if they live long enough. Thats around 51% of the Australian population.

For something that impacts more than half the population, we don’t talk about it very often, do we? Well, we reckon it’s time for that to change.

Do you think you might be going through perimenopause or menopause? Did you know that there are safe and effective treatments available that can drastically improve not only your quality of life, but help prevent the detrimental changes of menopause to your bone, heart, brain and s*xual health?

Don’t wait. Make an appointment today to talk about YOUR symptoms - jump onto HotDoc or call us on 94896472.

It’s National Carers Week this week and we want you to stand up and give a huge round of applause for all of the carers in our communities - did you know that more than one in 10 Aussies are carers?
The contribution that carers make to our communities and economy is ENORMOUS and we here at Northcote Medical certainly couldn’t do OUR jobs as well as we do without carers doing what they do.
Thank you carers. Happy National Carers Week!

The first Friday of the month is FUN FACT FRIDAY! Woo hooo!

Did you know that the average snoz… ah, honker… umm, snout…? Ok, we mean NOSE, makes around a litre of mucus every single day (along with the sinuses too of course)?

Not only does this mucus protect the membranes of your nose and upper respiratory tract from drying out, it also has a pretty important role in filtering the particles of dust and bacterias and viruses and microorganisms that we breathe in with every breath we take - protecting us from foreign bodies and also helping our trusty immune systems to defend our bodies!

Who knew that boogers were so helpful?!

Hahahaha! Happy Fun Fact Friday y’all!

New doctor alert!!  Meet Dr Tom.
Yes! Another Dr Tom blesses our team. Here is what you need to know about this one …

Dr. Tom is a dedicated GP with a broad range of medical expertise and a passion for Paediatrics.
He loves teaching, all things coffee, and engaging with his patients and colleagues on anything from weightlifting to ethics and philosophy.

When he’s not at Northcote Medical enjoying the cool vibes, Tom works in the Neonatal department at the Royal Women’s Hospital and thinks he’s been to well over 300 deliveries so far!

A lover of both cats and dogs, and secretly an opera and musical theatre nerd, Dr. Tom’s dry wit is legendary, especially on trivia nights. If you crack a pun, you’ll definitely see him laugh – unless he’s too busy chasing that perfect roast chicken recipe (thanks, Thomas Keller!).

Make sure you say ‘hi’ next time you bump into him eating a cinnamon cruller at his favourite local spot, Holy Sugar!

There might be an easy solution to help you start to feel like your old self again.

Meet Cara, Our Newest Medical Receptionist!
Cara is the warm and welcoming face you’ll see when you visit us at Northcote Medical.

With a passion for helping others, she’s always ready to answer your calls, schedule your appointments, and assist with any questions you may have.

Outside of work, Cara loves spending time on the peninsula, especially when she’s out on her boat catching calamari or flathead.
Cooking for friends and family is her go-to way to unwind, and she’s a proud dog lover.
Fun fact: Cara was the assistant manager of catering for all the food outlets at the 2012 London Olympic Games—an experience that combined her love for food and logistics on a global stage.
Her favourite movie? «Dirty Dancing,» of course! And when it comes to cooking, her enchiladas are a crowd-pleaser. Given the choice between a personal trainer or a personal chef, Cara would opt for the trainer to keep up with her active lifestyle.

Before she joined the Northcote Medical team, Cara was busy handling dogs at a daycare in Abbotsford. Now, she cherishes the friendly smiles that greet her every day at work, both from patients and colleagues alike.
When she’s not at the clinic, you might find her enjoying a meal at her favourite local spots: Narai Thai, Tao’s Dumplings, or Barry.

All Well Healthcare Communications staff are fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Meet Nat!
She’s in the home stretch of her GP training with just 6 months to go. Nat kicked off her medical journey in sunny Queensland, graduating from Griffith Uni and interning at Logan Hospital.
After coming back to her roots in Victoria, she spent time at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, diving into different specialties, and then got some extra paediatric experience at Werribee Mercy.
She’s also got a Bachelor of Science and a Certificate in Child Health under her belt!
Nat’s all about primary care, with a soft spot for paediatrics and family medicine.

She’s always up for a good chat, so don’t be shy—say hi next time you see her!
When she’s not in the clinic, you might spot her jogging (slowly!) around Princess Park, jamming out at live gigs, or chasing the title of ‘Favourite Aunt’ with her two adorable nieces.

It’s Friday 🎉 Big smiles and our best wishes for an amazing weekend!

Welcome To Northcote Medical

Northcote Medical is your local GP doctors clinic. We’ve been in Northcote for 30 years, assisting many patients, their families and their friends who they often recommend come and see us.

We’re a little bit different to some medical clinics. We encourage you to come in and see us for any discussion around your health, not just when you feel unwell. At times when you are feeling your best, might be a great time to have a health check and find out how to keep focussing on staying well.

For children and teenagers, we hold Preschool Check Ups, Primary Kids Health Checks and Teenage Health Checks. These sessions can be a great way for your child to get the answers to things that might be concerning them, or to check anything you might have as a parental concern for your child.

Our doctors specialise in all areas of health. We are an inclusive and welcoming clinic and every patient is provided with the highest level of medical care and compassion.
