As the Premier announces a new Cabinet ahead of the November election, Women with Disabilities Victoria welcomes new Ministers and acknowledges continuing Ministers across portfolios critical to our work.

We acknowledge the contribution of retiring Hon. Minister Mary-Anne Thomas. Her leadership as Minister for Health and Minister for Women has been vital in strengthening women’s health across Victoria, notably through the expansion of women’s health clinics and the Inquiry into Women’s Pain.

We also acknowledge Hon. Minister Lizzie Blandthorn continuing as Minister for Children and Minister for Disability. Our work with young people with disabilities highlights how essential this portfolio is for shaping access, inclusion, and leadership.

We welcome the following appointments:

Hon. Minister Harriet Shing as Minister for Health

Hon. Minister Gabrielle Williams as Minister for Women and Girls

Hon. Minister Melissa Horne as Minister for Prevention of Family Violence

Hon. Minister Paul Edbrooke as the inaugural Minister for Men and Boys.

These portfolios matter deeply to women, girls, and gender diverse people with disabilities. Preventing gender and disability violence requires a whole-of-community approach; it cannot be done in isolation. We look forward to working with the government to advance inclusion, equity, and safety across these areas.

In a recent Op-Ed published in Women's Agenda, our CEO Dr Trishima Mitra-Kahn reflects on women’s experiences of pain and the systems that shape how it is understood and responded to. For women and gender diverse people with disabilities, pain is not experienced in isolation. It is shaped by the intersection of sexism and ableism, influencing whether symptoms are recognised, investigated or dismissed.

Victoria has taken important steps through the Women’s Pain Inquiry. This piece highlights the opportunity and responsibility to ensure this reform reaches those facing the greatest barriers to care.

Slide 2 has a purple background with the WDV logo in the top right corner and a graphic of a megaphone in the bottom left. Today for Transgender Day of Visibility WDV would like to highlight the importance of access, safety and respect for all trans and gender diverse individuals with disabilities. We need to have an intersectional approach to our work to ensure no one is left behind.

We’re excited that our ‘Preventing Violence against LGBTIQA+ People with Disabilities’ project will soon be launching a range of co-designed resources designed to inform, empower, and support improved access and inclusion. Stay tuned for updates as we get closer to release.

The first slide has a dark purple background and the following words in white: ‘Trans inclusion means access, safety and respect’ At the bottom of the slide are cartoon images of two people. The first has long straight black hair and is wearing a white shirt with a rainbow on it. The second has pink short hair with a green jacket and a cream t shirt with the progress LGBTQIA+ flag on it. The WDV logo is in the top right.

The following slide has a cream background with purple writing on it. Saying; “We must design and implement targeted, intersectional policies and interventions that actively address these barriers. This includes embedding accessibility into LGBTIQA+ services, ensuring gender-affirming practices in disability services to recognise and dismantle systemic discrimination. This will create inclusive systems and ensure no one is left behind.”

The last slide has the same format with several referral support options for Switchboard, Rainbow door and Thorne Harbour Health.
