Today is National Self Advocacy Day! 💌

The second Wednesday of October is a day for celebrating achievements and empowering all people with disabilities to raise their voices on issues that are important to them.

A big thanks to our friends at the Self Advocacy Resource Unit (SARU) for encouraging us all to celebrate the important work of self-advocates around Australia!

Image description(s): A carousel of three beige social media tiles, each with the WDV logo positioned in the top half of the graphic. Tile one has a green speech bubble with the words: “National Self Advocacy Day, Wednesday October 8, 2025” featured in large, dark text. There are also two lilac hearts on either side of that speech bubble, as well as a graphic on the right side of a woman or gender diverse person. Tile two has two speech bubbles; one filled with a quote and the other filled with an image. The quote features words from WDV Leadership Hub Member, Sarah Porter, who in the image is shown wearing glasses and a light purple jacket. Tile three also features this speech bubble layout, instead highlighting a quote and featuring an image of WDV Youth Expert by Experience, Julie Dickson. Julie is shown reading a book, wearing glasses and a black jumper with bright flowers. Both the second and third tiles feature small lilac heart graphics.

The National Disability Summit ran from the 18th to the 19th of September. Jill Gallagher, CEO of the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO), delivered the keynote address.

WDV would like to specifically acknowledge her focus on the way that mainstream disability support systems have been failing Indigenous Communities.

Dr. Gallagher is quoted as saying: “Racism and stigma faced by Aboriginal people with disabilities drives the cycle of over-policing, under-servicing and incarceration.”

You can read the full article on National Indigenous Times here: https://buff.ly/j7SCsmj 🔗

The quote reads: “Culturally safe disability support is essential for Aboriginal Communities” with the word ‘essential’ highlighted with a curvy orange line graphic underneath. There is a two-tone PNG megaphone graphic on the top left hand side of this quote and an array of solid PNG coloured shapes are present in the bottom right hand corner.

WDV is working together with other disability advocacy organisations to gather information and think about our response to the Australian Government about suggested changes to the Disability Discrimination Act.

As a part of that, we are promoting Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA)'s survey! This survey provides participants with the opportunity to share experiences and ideas, and what you share will inform WDV and WWDA’s Discrimination Act Submission.

The link to the survey is included in the graphic above!

Image description: This tile has a white to purple background. The WWDA logo and Have Your Say icon are in the top left and right corners.
