2000 Stories Study

2000 Stories Study The 2000 Stories study is a landmark longitudinal study spanning over 30 years, beginning in 1992

2000 Stories is a landmark longitudinal study spanning almost 30 years. The project began in 1992 with around 2000 Year 9 students who were 14 to 15 years of age. These students completed six surveys from Years 9 to12 and three surveys in young adulthood (aged around 21, 24 and 29). The same participants completed surveys at 35 and 41 years of age. The first six surveys alone created one of the most comprehensive pictures of adolescent development in the world. We looked at many aspects of teenage health and behaviour, including mental health, personality and behaviour, school, family, and drug and alcohol use. This information has been used to improve the health of future generations by influencing policy and informing prevention programs. More recently, we have focussed on how teenage experiences, health and lifestyles may affect physical and emotional health in adulthood and in the next generation. Our findings have helped bring global attention to the important role of adolescence in shaping future health. Many of our original 2000 stories participants have children of their own, creating the unique opportunity to explore how the health of one generation may be related to the next. Our intergenerational study was launched in 2006 and aims to understand the processes that might influence many aspects of health and wellbeing across generations. Safety Information

We're excited to share that our Intergenerational Family Study is well underway!

As we celebrate the first year of data collection, we want to extend a big THANK YOU to all of you who have already participated so far. We’ve had a great response from parents and teens.

We are contacting families as your teen turns 15, so if you haven't heard from us yet – please get in touch, or if you haven’t had the chance to participate yet, there's still time to join in! Every person’s contribution matters, and we'd love to have you be a part of this important stage of the study.

This wave plays a significant role in helping us understand adolescent health and the factors that influence it across generations. Your willingness to share your experiences is incredibly valuable and helps us gather insights that can make a difference in the well-being of future generations.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the 2000 stories study.

Warm regards,

The 2000 Stories Team

Life gets incredibly busy, especially with teenagers!
Which is why we’ve made participating in this wave of the family study quick and easy.

We are inviting parents and teens to complete an online questionnaire each.

Parent surveys take just 15-20 mins and teen surveys take around 30 mins. Reimbursement will be given as thanks.

This wave is particularly special because your teen is the same age you/your partner were when the study began!

It's a unique opportunity to compare and draw important connections between generations.

As your children turn 15, we’ll reach out with a quick call. If you decide to participate, we'll email you the info and survey links.

Once you're done, we'll send out your gift cards.
It’s as simple as that.

We hope you'll be able to participate in this wave of the Victorian Intergenerational Health Cohort Study! Speak soon.

As always, feel free to contact us with any questions or for assistance

We are now starting the exciting next phase of our family study! We will be inviting all VIHCS families to complete a once-off, online survey.

The adolescent wave of the family study aims to get a comprehensive picture of adolescent development and understand the processes that might influence many aspects of health and wellbeing across generations.

This part of the study is especially significant because your child will be the same age as you were when you completed your first survey for the study. We have the unique opportunity to compare the health and wellbeing of today's adolescents with that of their parents' generation. In addition, we'll learn how teenage experiences and lifestyles could affect future generations' health.

Through influencing policy and informing prevention programs, the study will help us better understand how we can support the health and wellbeing of the next generation.

A huge thank you to all of the families who participated in the 8-year family study between 2015 and 2021! Your participation means so much to us and contributes to important research into the health and wellbeing of the world's young people.

Did you know:
- 86% of families participated including more than 1350 parents and almost 700 children when they were 8 years old.

- 50% of families participated in person (either at RCH or in your own home) and 50% participated over the phone

- Almost 25% of families participated even after the COVID pandemic began.

We really can't thank you enough, and will be contacting all parent participants soon about the exciting new wave of our intergenerational study!

Understanding your genes is a great way to understand certain things about yourself — yet, who we are is determined by so much more than just DNA.

You might have seen 'Creature' when you have visited us at the Royal Children's Hospital. This week the RCH wants to know what you think Creature looks like? 🐵🦗🦋

Is it a monkey? Is it an ant?

In this week’s , we explore the whimsical landmark sculpture on Main Street, well known as ‘Creature’!

The stunning artwork by artist Alexander Knox is the centrepiece of Main Street, standing 14 metres tall and running all the way up the five-storey atrium.

Although large in stature, Creature looks closely at a small butterfly flapping its wings, with the curious pair representing a friendly place where all things are cared about, great or small.

Creature is a mixture of spectacular organic shapes and colours, recognising the important role of art in the healing process.

Also floating above Creature are five mobile sculptures by artist Jade Oakley. The ‘Sky Garden’ features fairies based on silhouettes of children leaping and jumping, drawing on the free-spirited and playful nature of children.

If you have visited the RCH recently, you would have noticed a barrier around Creature to protect children and families from the spreading of germs. But don’t worry, you can still appreciate Creature’s magnificence from a distance.

Let us know what you think Creature looks like below!
