I often think about a time when a lot of clothing was made for the body that was going to wear it, by someone who would measure everything and then make the garment to fit like a glove (and possibly also make some gloves to go with it) - e.g. both of my Nonnas and my Mum 🫶🏼

I then compared this to a process I tend to dislike quite strongly: online shopping for clothes.

I appreciate the perceived convenience, but in my experience, I tend to pinball between buying and returning until I end up considering picking up where Year 8 Emily left off and taking up sewing again (or maybe just visiting the physical store if it exists) 🙃

While custom-made clothing is a fun dream I have (wouldn’t we all LOVE a trip to the Modiste?! 😉), tailored healthcare is absolutely a reality if you see a Chinese Medicine Practitioner (and many other practitioners too).

No two treatments are the same because no two humans are the same or have exactly the same combination of constitution, symptoms and patterns.

And this is a beautiful and powerful thing.

A treatment that is designed just for you has a lot more scope to create meaningful change than a one-size-fits-all approach.

From acupuncture point prescriptions to herbal formulas to diet and lifestyle advice, everything is intentionally chosen just for you and what your body needs at that point in time.

Sounds pretty good, right?

Ready to get started with Chinese Medicine?

I’ve got one appointment left tomorrow in Fitzroy North for a new or return patient (10:30am).

Have a great Friday and weekend 💕

Ok let’s be real: Chinese herbs are generally not the most pleasant tasting of drinks (sorry).

But, they can be very helpful in supporting LOTS of different health concerns.

So please know, even if your Chinese herbs don’t taste like hot chocolate or chai (sorry again), they are doing you good!

And, if you’re really struggling with the taste, here are a few tips:

🌿 If you’re taking powdered raw herbs or granules, keep the added water to a minimum and take your herbs like a shot

🌿 Pinch your nose and drink them quickly

🌿 Add a little bit of honey to your herbs (if appropriate for you)

Time to get some herbs into your life? I’d love to support you (link in bio to book)!

Trying to conceive?

The most key Chinese Medicine piece of advice to keep in mind is to maximise warm foods and drinks and go easy on the cold things.

Why?

Because when we consume lots of cold foods and drinks, over time the digestive system weakens because it’s got to work harder to process the food.

In some cases, it can become so depleted that it starts to be unable to complete digestion and some cold will be stored in the body to be dealt with later.

In nature, heat rises and cold sinks, and the same thing happens in the body, i.e. the cold will sink to the lower body.

The uterus is in the lower body and it’s very common for there to be cold in uterus (that’s why it can feel so good to apply heat when you have period pain).

So, if you’re trying to conceive, give your digestive system and uterus a helping hand and stick to (as much as possible) warm foods and drinks.

And definitely no cold foods/drinks during your period, pls 🙏🏼

If you’re TTC and need some extra support, I’ve got you (and would love to help)!

How does acupuncture actually work?

Acupuncture works on a channel system, meaning that even if you come in with a symptoms in one part of the body, we might be needling a seemingly unrelated part of the body (remember though: everything is connected, so they are not unrelated at all 😏).

For example, you’ve got a sore neck and we needle points on the hands, or you’ve got an issue with your eye and we needle a point on the leg.

Although we can needle directly into the affected area of the body (this can be helpful to invite Qi and Blood flow to the area, which is necessary and very helpful in some cases), we can also communicate with the body and affected areas using the channel systems that connect them.

Curious to give acupuncture a go? I’d love to support you!

Tomorrow we move into the Year of the Yang Fire Horse 🔥🐎

From the elusive and mystical Snake, emerges the practical, enduring and sensitive Horse.

This year brings peak peak Yang energy. This can mean BIG, vibrant and fast-moving, with the potential for feeling scattered or anxious, but it also means play, joy and excitement. Think summertime energy ☀️😎🍉🏖️

The horse is a symbol of endurance, sensitivity, gentleness and strength. It will be these qualities that will see us through the year (especially the more fiery parts!).

The main things to keep an eye on health-wise this year are mental health, skin health and heart health, because the main organ of the year is the Heart, which is affected by all the emotions, has a big influence on the skin, and of course has a connection with the anatomical heart 🫀

To balance the abundant Yang energy this year, it’s important to be cultivating our Yin. Here are some tips:

🤍 Lie down - Lying down = true rest.

🤍 Grounding - Think bare feet on grass or sand, being near the sea/river/lake, meditating, breath work or gentle movement.

🤍 Relationships - Spend quality time with the people you love. The Fire element also includes the Pericardium, which is the organ that governs our relationships.

🤍 Food - Eat to nourish the Fire element (green veg, bitter foods, fish, lamb) and Yin (good quality fats, bone broths, keep hydrated).

🤍 Enjoy the moment - Watch out for adrenalin-inducing chaos and burn out that comes with moving to the next thing too quickly. Enjoy and savour your experiences.

In summary, the Yang Fire Horse is bringing some seriously supercharged horse power. Having said that, the emotion of the Fire element is joy and assuming we are not overdoing it (i.e. overstimulation), there is much excitement, imagination, curiosity and play to be had this year.

If your nervous system feels overloaded at any time, please don’t hesitate to book an appointment - I would love to support you! 🥰

Wishing you a wonderful Year of the Yang Fire Horse 🧧🔥🐎

What’s happening when your Chinese Medicine Practitioner takes the pulse? And why on both wrists??

The pulse is an immensely powerful tool that tells us many things about what’s happening in the body (it’s not just about the pulse rate).

It’s a conversation between practitioner and patient on an energetic level.

Pulse diagnosis of the radial artery is used in Chinese Medicine (along with questioning, observation, tongue diagnosis, listening and smelling) to give us information about the quality and abundance of Yin, Yang, Qi, Blood and Body Fluids.

It also gives us information about the 12 organs (each has its own position), as well as the three regions of the body (upper, middle and lower) and the spaces in between.

As some examples, the pulse can tell us if you’re dehydrated, low on energy, experiencing pain, at the initial stages of a cold or whether you’ve recently eaten.

The more practise and experience, the more a practitioner can understand from the pulse.

If you’re trying to conceive, it’s always important to remember that male fertility is half the equation!

Especially if you’re finding that conceiving isn’t as straightforward as you thought, an excellent place to start is with the s***m.

In the last 40 years, male fertility in general has declined significantly. Therefore, it’s actually really common to have s***m that aren’t abundant enough (count), can’t swim forward (progressive motility) or aren’t in form to fertilise the egg (morphology).

But s***m are tiny! How could we possibly know this information?

Enter: the semen analysis!

This very straightforward test gives us all of the above info, plus some important extras.

If you find out that the s***m are not doing amazing (which, statistically speaking, is likely), the good news is that Chinese Medicine can be a big help in supporting the s***m to be their best, so they can make that big journey to the egg, and co-create a healthy pregnancy.
