LI 10 - Shǒu Sān Lǐ - 手三里 - Arm Three Miles

This point mirrors the location of ST 36 (Leg Three Miles) and mirrors function in terms of the way ST 36 helps strengthen the legs, and LI 10 can help strengthen/support the arms.

However, if I use this point in clinic (or on myself at home), it’s often more for its ability to move Qi and Blood in the lower body. Namely, I’m talking about easing period pain (one of my favourite teachers at Uni taught me this).

When things are getting intense during bleeding, and your heat pack is already doing its bit, sometimes massaging this point can help to settle things a bit more.

With your arm bent, start at the outside of your elbow, in the fleshy part above the bone and slide your finger closer towards your hand (just a cm or two) until you find the tender spot (it’s tender on most people).

If you need some extra support with getting your period to be your bestie rather than a friend you’d rather not come to visit, book in an appointment with me and let’s get started! 🩷

The Large Intestine 💩

The ultimate letting go organ and partner of the Lungs 🤍

The Large Intestine in Chinese medicine has a pretty simple job: to receive digested food from the Small Intestine, reabsorb some of the fluids and then turn whatever is left into stools and let it go.

Other symptoms associated with the bowels like diarrhoea, constipation and bloating, relate more to the Spleen or Liver in Chinese medicine (rather than solely the Large Intestine as in Western medicine).

The Large Intestine relies on the Lungs to provide the “pushing power” and descending Qi to eliminate stools, so if the Lung Qi is deficient, this can slow the passage of the stools (commonly seen in the elderly).

Our ability to let go mentally-emotionally also ties in with how the Large Intestine is letting go of stools physically - the physical can reflect the mental-emotional and vice versa.

One of the five taxations (as stated in the Su Wen) is that looking taxes the Blood.

Looking includes staring at a screen, reading, but also searching, desiring, yearning (that is ultimately unfulfilled).

I’m taking a guess that if you’re reading/watching this, you spend about as much time as most of us on your phone in a typical day (i.e. A LOT).

When the eyes are asked to look at a screen for many hours every day, this depletes the Blood (the Blood nourishes this eyes, and if they are working overtime, so is the Blood).

And Blood is fundamental to a restful night’s sleep because the Spirit needs the Blood to be anchored in the Heart and Liver at night.

Without enough Blood, the Spirit can float and become unsettled and this is basically what is happening when it’s hard to get to sleep or stay asleep or you’re having vivid dreams.

So, as hard as I KNOW it is (trust me) to limit screen time, if you’re really struggling with sleep:

a) Create some space between you and your phone, especially in that hour before bedtime, and

b) Book in for an acupuncture appointment - I’d love to support you to get that peaceful sleep you’re missing!

Sweet dreams 😴

The quote on today is:

“Take rest; a field that has rested gives bountiful crop” - Ovid

It’s a tricky one to remember in the moment sometimes, especially when life is constantly demanding more of us, and it can feel like taking a rest is not an option (“but I don’t have time to stop” 😩).

It’s the resting that really moves the needle though. We need that time to integrate and recover, so that we can progress to the next level. Ask any athlete!

If you’ve got the space this weekend, do let yourself rest.

If you’re working or got lots of things on, do not underestimate the power of little moments of rest: 5 long, slow breaths, a 5-min lie down, one song’s worth of dancing, a short meditation.

Weave it in wherever you can. Rest is wholly necessary.

As .yoga keeps saying in his classes: let rest be a skill 💪🏼

I’m in clinic today (), and I’m taking a break over the weekend, so I’ll be back from Tuesday 7th April.

Have a beautiful long weekend and Easter everyone! 🐣🐰🍫

Rest well xx
