Joy is the emotion of the Heart 😁

In Chinese Medicine, joy can relate to healthy contentment, but also excess joy or overstimulation.

Joy can be a healthy state of contentment, which is for sure a beautiful place to find yourself, and very much a state that the entire body (and particularly the Heart) enJOY being in (see what I did there? 😏), because the Shen is peaceful and the Qi relaxes and slows down.

In Jeffrey Jensen Arnett’s journal article “Joy: An Integrative Theory”, he defines joy as “an intense, temporary feeling of elation combined with an appraisal of right relation between ourselves and the world, a sense that there is an ideal fit between ourselves and the world around us at that moment”.

I love this because in the context of the Heart being the Emperor of the body and the home of the Shen, and therefore very much the centre of our being, it makes sense that joy is the emotion we feel when who we are is in alignment with what we are experiencing. It’s as if the lines that separate us from the world blur for a moment and we feel that deeply peaceful sense of belonging ✨

On the flip side, “joy” also encompasses excess joy, craving and overstimulation.

Each of these emotions can disrupt the grounding of Yang and in turn agitate the Shen and the Heart, leading to symptoms like palpitations, insomnia, restlessness and talking excessively.

We live in a world that is rife with overstimulation. Understandably, most of us have nervous systems that are (at least) a little ungrounded or overwhelmed most of the time.

Are you in need of some realignment or grounding?

Maybe it’s time to speak to your Chinese Medicine Practitioner (I’ll be back in clinic at the end of this week!). Link in bio to book!

Wishing you a peacefully joyful rest of your week ❤️

It’s so easy to to have some issue with our bodies, so easy to ask the question, “why doesn’t my body do this?” or “why don’t I look like that?”

The truth of truths is that our wonderful, infinitely intelligent, beautiful bodies are our homes.

And a home that we take care of, necessarily takes care of us 🩷

A gift that I think Chinese Medicine gives us is an understanding of the body as an ecosystem which is always doing its very best in the environments and situations we place them in.

Having an understanding of the innate intelligence and elegance of our bodies can help us to appreciate with awe that our bodies, even if they aren’t changing or doing or appearing as we want, are our very special and very unique and very wise homes for this lifetime.

Consider this a little invitation (for me as well) to thank your body as often as you can for being as brilliant as it is.

There really is no home like you, body, and no place like home 🏠💖

It’s 2026 - let’s go!!

Although the new year is not the ONLY time to get started on new things or work on what you’ve been meaning to or want to work on, it can be a GREAT time because there’s that wonderful clean slate of dates with a “1” in them (thank you, January), and the momentum of newness.

Let us make this year YOUR YEAR to manage your stress like a boss, sleep like a Queen/King, make your period a dream or bring a tiny human into the world.

In my experience, goals/visions/dreams, particularly health-related and big life ones, need a strong support system in place.

I would love to be a part of that for you.

I’m back in clinic from 9th Jan (link in bio to book). Let’s get some acupuncture and herbs into your life and create some wonderful things in 2026 💖

The Heart - Xīn - 心 🫀🩸❤️‍🔥👑

In Chinese Medicine, the Heart is referred to as the Emperor of the body and the root of life. It is protected by the Pericardium and forms a Yin-Yang pair with the Small Intestine.

Remember: I’m talking about the Heart organ system as viewed in Chinese Medicine, rather than the anatomical heart organ.

The two main functions of the Heart are to:

🩸 Govern Blood
The Heart transforms Food Qi (sent from the Spleen via the Lungs) into Blood. It then controls the circulation of Blood (with some additional support from the Lungs, Liver and Spleen) and keeps the blood vessels elastic and smooth.

🏠 House the Shen (Spirit)
The Shen is the spirit of the Heart and governs emotions, consciousness, memory, thinking and sleep. The Shen relies on the strength of the Heart and abundance of Heart Blood to be nourished and anchored.

The state of the Heart is presented to the outside world through the complexion and the body of the tongue (both used as diagnostic tools in Chinese Medicine).

The best ways to support your Heart this summer are:

❤️ All emotions affect the Heart, so ensure that you’re keeping that energy in motion, and seek support if you need it.

❤️ Eat regularly and eat well, so that the Spleen can make enough Food Qi to send to the Heart to make enough Blood.

❤️ Avoid/limit spicy foods and heating foods/drinks like sugar, coffee, garlic, onion, chocolate and alcohol, as the Heart particularly dislikes Heat and all of these add Heat to the body and perpetuate dryness (Heat dries things out), which in turn depletes Body Fluids, Yin and Blood.

❤️ See your Chinese Medicine Practitioner regularly 🙏🏼
