Charlotte has held various roles within IOE. She started as a teenage volunteer in 2014 and progressed through as a Junior Support Worker, Rec Leader, Rec Admin and Rec Coordinator.

"Volunteering at Interchange Outer East has had a HUGE impact on me and it has changed the entire trajectory of my life. It has made me a more patient and compassionate person and a fierce advocate for people with a disability and their independence.

Volunteering built the foundations for me to move through the ranks at IOE and without it, I would never have had the skills I have today. Through my experiences, I gained invaluable skills in communication, learning how to work under pressure, problem solving, and teamwork.

The opportunities I have had through volunteering have allowed me to meet the most amazing people that have enriched my life in countless ways as well as built my confidence and independence as a person.

Starting as a volunteer I was able to build the skills to progress my career at Interchange Outer East and beyond. Every step along this journey has taught me something new, and I am grateful for the growth and opportunities it has given me."

Lots of laughs, good company and a well-deserved night out!

To celebrate National Volunteer Week, we took some of our incredible volunteers to a comedy night at as a small way to say thank you for everything they do.

Our volunteers give their time, energy and heart to help make so many IOE programs, camps and activities possible, and we are so grateful for the difference they make in the lives of the people we support every day.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers,we appreciate you more than words can say.

Giacomo began volunteering with IOE in 2025 and has clocked up 1,500 hours to date - AMAZING!!!

"I started volunteering because my brother is non-verbal and has ASD, so I’ve been around support workers my whole life.

Since 2025, I’ve done over 1,500 volunteer hours and I keep coming back because I actually really enjoy it.

I help out with the monthly train lovers group and boys youth group, and one of the best parts is when the participants recognise me and get excited to see me. It makes you feel really good knowing you can have a positive impact on someone’s day.

Volunteering is fun! You meet awesome people, and the whole community feels like one big family."

Rori's parents, first met as IOE volunteers back when they were teenagers. Today, Rori continues the family tradition.

"Hey, I’m Rori! I decided to sign up as a volunteer near the end of 2024 after growing up hearing so many stories from my parents about their own experiences volunteering with Interchange Outer East. From a young age, I’d always been excited to get involved myself, and now I completely understand why they loved it so much.

One of the best parts of volunteering has been the connections you make with other volunteers, families, and participants. I’ve loved meeting people who volunteered alongside my parents, aunties, and uncles, and hearing all the funny stories about them that I never would have expected!

It’s really special to be continuing something that means so much to my family, and even more special that I get to volunteer alongside my cousins too."

National Volunteer Week 2026

Monday night, a group of our incredible volunteers came together for a Positive Behaviour Support training session.

Curated by our Volunteer Coordinators and Pathways Coordinator, and designed by our expert Behaviour Support Practitioner, the session focused on understanding that all behaviour is communication and explored practical ways to:
• Enhance communication
• Increase choice
• Treat people equally
• Practice unconditional positive regard

At IOE, we are committed to supporting and valuing our volunteers by providing opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills and strengthen the support they provide to our participants and families.

Jessop is part of the Buddy Program for younger volunteers aged 12-14. After volunteering for the first time, Jess has continued to volunteer every month since!

"I’ve done over 500 volunteer hours and I started volunteering because I wanted to help people in the community and do something useful. I think other people should just give it a go because you make new friends, have fun and help people at the same time.

One of my favourite things was at YMCA Camp Manyung when I helped a participant go on the flying fox for the first time. It was really cool seeing how happy they were and they may not have done this without me. I love helping on camps and day activities, especially ones with trains."

Your Year to Volunteer!

Like so many IOE staff over the years, Lyndelle first signed up to volunteer. Even as an IOE support worker, Lyndelle still continues to volunteer and we love having her!

"I first started volunteering in 2021, and now I’m proud to work as a support worker. Volunteering opened my eyes to new experiences, helped me meet incredible people, and taught me so much about being responsive and sensitive to people with disabilities.

Coming from a background in teaching, coaching and working with children, I wanted to learn more and challenge myself in a meaningful way. What I found was something truly rewarding. Volunteering is a win-win, you get to experience things you may never have otherwise, while helping someone else enjoy those moments too."
