Hidden Job Market
Today I am going to discuss the hidden job market. Most organisations today have an internal capability to recruit resources for the firm and they have many of the tools of the recruiter. In fact, we have trained the people and the recruitment industry has developed many of the tools the organisations use to resource their internal recruitment business functions.
So, what happens when the board or the company needs to recruit a senior executive or needs to replace a resignation or bring in a new skill or knowledge. Is it confidential or sensitive? Do they want to target a competitor or indeed a customer…? Do they want to benchmark internal capability against what might be available externally and at what price? Or do they want some market information? Is the organisation going to establish in a new geography i.e. country?
They have the option of an internal recruitment function, but they don’t have the confidentiality or the expertise…advertise and use a blunt tool, executive recruitment and search consultants are sharp tools….so they may use an external provider…to tap the hidden job market. Another piece of the hidden job market is where an organisation will open up an opportunity to secure a particular skill set, specialised knowledge, experience or competency. Olympics and Executive Selection
The Winter Olympics will dominate the global media for the few weeks and we will see the results of years of training culminate in heats and finals with eventual winners. One person or a team will get the “gold medal” and their name will be recognized for the achievement. The similarity with executive selection comes with long list of candidates moving through the heats of qualification and matching, to the final, with the shortlisted candidates competing for the opportunity. They compete for role and a the client identifies a preferred candidate to join them in the role responsibility.
For every successful placement to a role there have been a number of others who have offered their candidature and been unsuccessful in the final outcome. The worthiness of these individuals should always be valued. They have put forward their time, demostrated their skills and competancies and been worthy competitors or they should not have made the longlist or the shortlist.
