1. Uncomfortable or old mattress/pillow – Sleeping on a worn-out mattress or unsupportive pillow can cause body aches, restless tossing, and poor alignment of your spine. Even small sagging or lumpy spots can disrupt your sleep without you realizing it.
2. Stress and anxiety – When your mind is constantly racing with worries or to-do lists, it’s hard for your body to relax. Stress can increase cortisol levels, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay in deep restorative sleep.
3. Excessive screen time before bed – Phones, tablets, and laptops emit blue light, which can trick your brain into thinking it’s daytime. This suppresses melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, delaying sleep onset and reducing sleep quality.
4. Caffeine or heavy meals late in the day – Caffeine is a stimulant that can keep you awake for hours, while eating large, spicy, or greasy meals can cause indigestion, acid reflux, or discomfort, all of which make falling asleep harder.
5. Irregular sleep schedule – Going to bed and waking up at different times each day confuses your circadian rhythm (your body’s internal clock). This can lead to difficulty falling asleep, waking up tired, and feeling groggy throughout the day.
