Alcidion

Alcidion Alcidion provides smarter solutions for clinicians. Alcidion provides active intelligence and decision support software for high performance healthcare.

With our FHIR-events platform, Miya Precision, we assist healthcare organisations in building interoperable digital ecosystems that liberate data to enhance patient outcomes. Alcidion is an innovative health informatics company that specializes in clinical products that improve productivity, safety and efficiency. By making clinicians more efficient, eliminating key clinical risks, tracking patient progress through journeys within and between healthcare facilities and making recommendations about patient care to the care team based on complex analysis of the clinical and administrative context for each patient, the patient flow, patient safety and organisational efficiency can all be improved and key critical risks eliminated. Alcidion has created the Miya Platform, which uses a Decision Support Engine (DSE) to actively monitor electronic data feeds to detect emerging risk to patients and to the organization. Miya can provide guidance to the right people to mitigate risk before harm occurs.

A huge thank you to all the Queensland attendees at this week’s ACHSM Patient Flow workshop – what an absolutely fantastic day.

We were blown away by your passion and enthusiasm for this topic, with many representatives travelling far across the state to join the conversation. Over three workshops, (and with an army of stickynotes) we covered the existing problems, opportunities and emerging solutions across three perspectives: policy & system level, digital health, and new models of care. Key solutions and opportunities that emerged included:
- Education, not just Training
- Long stay patient escalation processes
- Protected time for patient flow improvements
- Truly integrated digital systems, system-wide visibility

Many thanks to our facilitators Kate Wylie, Ross Hadfield, Laureen Hines, for keeping the day running smoothly and for sharing their insights as we discussed. Our heartfelt gratitude also to Professor Andrew Way for an excellent keynote on the patient flow initiatives he led at the Alfred Hospital and Professor Clair Sullivan for the critical message that patient flow is not just an operational challenge, but a ‘pressing and important clinical issue.’

Twenty-one years ago, Julia Stevens became the first employee at MKM Health, a company that would eventually become part of Alcidion. Today, as COO, she is a critical leader on digital health projects everywhere from major hospitals to deployed military settings.

What does it take to build technology that works when stakes are highest and conditions are toughest? Julia gives her thoughts below. https://hubs.ly/Q03LhhBm0

Julia Stevens has been with Alcidion for over two decades, starting as the first employee at MKM Health, which later merged with Alcidion in 2018. Read about her story and how Alcidion has structured its operations for global delivery success.

Congratulations to the hard-working team at Northern Adelaide Local Health Network, who have successfully completed user acceptance testing for their Miya Precision implementation 👏

This is a key milestone in testing the new digital patient flow pathways and confirms readiness for live deployment. It is always exciting for clinical users to experience Miya Flow for the first time and rewarding for the project teams who have worked hard to get to this stage. Now on to the deployment phase of the program.

Well done to both the digital and clinical teams who have worked extremely hard to get us to a successful UAT.

Alcidion has expanded its partnership with North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) to deliver MediViewer as an expansion to the Miya Precision Electronic Patient Record (EPR) solution, providing clinicians with seamless access to scanned and historical patient records.

Mizaic’s MediViewer is an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) which will digitise the trust's paper patient health records, making them accessible directly in the Miya Precision EPR. All patient records will be accessible through a single user interface, reducing delays caused by paper-based processes and facilitating access to important patient information at point of care.

MediViewer is already in use by more than 20 trusts, including a number within the NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board. This enhanced information-sharing will enable a more coordinated healthcare journey for patients receiving care across multiple sites.

Alcidion Group Managing Director and CEO Kate Quirke said:
“We continue to work closely with the team at NCIC to support the digitisation of clinical workflows, improving the clinical team’s access to information at the point of care. The implementation of MediViewer inside of the Miya Precision EPR provides the seamless user experience that has resulted in Miya Precision being recognised by the NHS for its exceptional usability. Importantly, the digitisation of patient health records lays the foundation for the adoption of emerging technologies including AI and predictive analytics.”

Alcidion CTO Sean Walker explains why Australian-specific standards are game-changers for healthcare organisations in his recent Sparked Standards in Action Showcase interview:
"So many organisations are holding onto legacy systems, because... the implementation cost is very difficult. As we move towards FHIR and better interoperability, it's really going to improve the ecosystem."

"Creating those Australian-based standards that are specific to Australia so we can have seamless data transfer between platforms and reducing inconsistencies of data mapping... this reduces the cost of implementation for healthcare organisations and will ultimately result in increased safety for patients."

This is exactly the challenge Miya Precision addresses - using FHIR standards and interoperability to wrap around existing legacy systems, unlocking their data and enabling modern clinical decision support features without the need for costly rip-and-replace implementations.

This is one you don't want to miss: Professor Andrew Way AM, Alcidion’s newest board member speaks with Chair Rebecca Wilson. As former longstanding CEO of Alfred health, Andrew shares unique real-world perspectives on how digital innovation can reshape hospital operations, to tackle modern challenges and pressures.

This is an engaging conversation with one of Australia’s most celebrated healthcare leaders, who in 2019 was awarded an AM for clinical research leadership, bringing nearly 25 years' C-level experience across the Australian and UK healthcare systems.

“We need to understand hospital stays and rehabilitation as patients experience them - not just as our systems report them. That’s how we’ll truly measure and improve care.”
