What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?
As men get older, it’s normal for the prostate to gradually enlarge. This process is called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and it’s incredibly common, affecting around 50% of men over the age of 50.
While BPH isn’t cancer, the changes it causes in the prostate can affect the way the bladder works, leading to what doctors call lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
These might include:
Needing to urinate more often
A weaker flow of urine
Feeling like the bladder isn’t completely empty
To understand what’s going on, Dr Love may recommend simple, non-invasive tests such as:
A urine flow test
Ultrasound scans
The International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaire
PSA and urine tests
Importantly, the size of the prostate is less important than the symptoms it causes. If you’ve noticed changes in your urinary habits, you don’t have to just “put up with it.” Early assessment can make a big difference.
