Yes this absolutely sounds easier said that done! Particularly if you have thoughts that are frequent and distressing in nature. However….it is one of THE most effective strategies for managing anxious thinking.

Here is how I teach my clients to ignore their anxious and intrusive thoughts.

Step 1: Acknowledge the thought, and name it as anxiety.
Don’t try to reason with the thought or challenge it (with intrusive thoughts particularly those associated with generalised anxiety and OCD, these thoughts are often irrational and usually become more frequent and intrusive the more attention and time we give to them). Label the thought as anxiety and then distract yourself. Some people also find it helpful to say something like “be quiet anxiety” or “anxiety I’m not paying attention to you today”.

Step 2: Distraction.
Allow the thought to be there in the background while you engage in an activity that you would usually find relaxing, fun, grounding, that distracts your thinking and diverts your attention elsewhere. Some helpful distraction activities can be: a crossword puzzle; drawing, listening to a podcast; singing aloud to your favourite song/listening to music and singing in your head while going for a run or walk; calling a family member or friend and having a conversation about a topic that’s neutral/not anxiety based; playing a musical instrument, watching a fave tv series.

If you ignore the thoughts long enough they will eventually reduce in intensity and frequency.

If you are having difficulty knowing whether your thoughts are anxious thoughts or real concerns that need attending to, speaking with a mental health professional can help provide clarity and reassurance.

Access to a Medicare rebate for an additional 10 sessions with a Psychologist is due to expire in December, meaning clients will only able to claim a rebate for 10 instead of 20 sessions per Calendar Year.

Most mental health issues require more than 10 sessions to be effectively treated and managed. And once treated and managed, clients will often return to their Psychologist on an as need basis to “check in”, for relapse prevention support, and for general support to help maintain good mental health-because life happens, stress happens, life changes and transitions happen, lapses happen, and accessing Mental Health Care should be accessible as needed, for as long as needed, without the pressure to “fix” issues in a 10 session window per Calendar Year.
