Seborrheic Keratosis removal with Cryopen ❄️

Seborrheic Keratosis (SK) are a common, non cancerous growth that are seen more frequently with age and appear like a waxy or scaly spot on the skin and can range from light brown to dark in colour.

Sometimes also referred to as Senile Warts, SK’s occur when our pigment contains keratinocyte skin cells multiply too quickly forming harmless but cosmetically unappealing growths on the skin.

Cryopen is a quick and painless way to safely remove SK’s and in lighter appearing lesions all traces of the SK will resolve after a short healing period.

With one’s that have a heavier pigment granule content then melanin inhibitor products and some peels will achieve a more uniformed complexion.

So excited to see the progress we have been making 😍

There is no overnight solution to inflammatory acne, but with the right lifestyle changes, internal work and a tailored skin program there is light at the end of the tunnel.

There will be ups and downs, skin can purge in the early stages as we work with the skin to release the underlying congestion but if we trust the process then the magic will happen ❤️

Collagen peptides have been studied to show skin improvements in hydration levels, elasticity and collagen density.

Not only have the collagen peptides been shown to stimulate dermal hyaluronic acid production for plump hydrated skin, they can help to support skin barrier function and reduce trans epidermal water loss TEWL; thereby also aiding epidermal moisture.

We recommend taking 2 tspn of our Vital-sol Collagen Boost Peptides daily, mixed in your coffee, tea, juice or a smoothie.

Do you battle with hormonal acne?

Are you a PCOS sufferer that battles with unwanted facial hair?

Drinking 2 to 3 cups of herbal tea 🍵 infused with Spearmint 🍃 such as our naturopathic herbal tincture “Clarity Certified Organic Tea” can have an anti-androgenic effect and decrease testosterone hormone levels in females.

Our Clarity tea by combines Spearmint with Burdock Root, Lemon Grass, and Calendula Petals to support skin clarity and is on my recommended acne skin internal support list to help get long term results.

I also recommend my younger electrolysis clients who are experiencing hormone related hirsutism (excess hair growth), to help lower the hormonal stimulation on the hair follicle.

There has been countless studies on the effects of Spearmint tea in hormonal acne, PCOS related hirsutism over the years backing the positive benefits of consuming 2-3 cups daily with significant results being seen sometimes within as early as 2-3 months.

Consistency is key here, to reap the benefits we need to be strict and keep to the daily intake of 2-3 cups each and every day. If it difficult to find the time to drink 2-3 cups of hot tea a day, try brewing all 3 cups in one go in the morning and try drinking it cold from a portable glass drink bottle.

This is where what you do on a daily basis in between your in clinic visits becomes so important to your skin journey results. It’s the little daily changes that help the magic happen.

Drinking your tea, starting your day with warm water and half a squeezed lemon 🍋 to wake up your liver for detoxification, changing your pillow case every 3rd day after sleeping one night on one side and then flipping it the next. Not using fabric softener to wash your pillow case. Little lifestyle changes that make big changes to acne prone skin 🥰

Have you tried Spearmint infused tea for hormonal acne or symptoms of PCOS? Did you see results with your daily consumption?

I love this video showing the difference between a self prescribed incorrect skin care routine that leads to inflammation and a very unhappy skin barrier versus a skin type correct professionally prescribed skin care routine and in-clinic routine that brings healing and skin health.

I know it’s tempting to use that product the latest Influencer with the perfect complexion is recommending on their socials or the well meaning friend or even the stranger on a beauty forum but they don’t know your skin or what it needs to be healthy and clear.

Visiting a professional who can do a thorough skin consultation and then tailor a bespoke routine and treatment plan is where the magic happens.

Interestingly, my client had chose her original skin care routine based on its ‘anti-ageing’ benefits but what it actually did is cause chronic inflammation and broke down her skin barrier, leading to constant breakouts that were scarring her skin.

Ironically, all that inflammation her skin was experiencing from the incorrect skin care products was actually prematurely ageing her skin in the long run through the ‘inflammageing’ phenomenon.

The first step of any good skin program is to reduce the heat and inflammation, and heal the barrier. From there we can move into more advanced dermal treatments and actives in skin care products.

Seborrheic Keratosis, also referred so as SK is a very common non cancerous growth that can occur on an aging skin, sometimes referred to as ‘old age warts’ or ‘barnacle’ due to the scaly, rough and slightly raised texture of the plaques.

Flat SK’s can sometimes be misdiagnosed for a solar lentigo or sun spot.

Most often appearing on the face, chest shoulders or back, it is not known exactly what causes them but there tends to be a family history of the growths and sun exposure may also play a role in the severity but they can still appear on areas that have not had sun exposure.

Darker skin individuals can present with a variant of SK’s known as Dermatosis papulosa Nigra on the head, neck and chest. These lesions present much smaller than a typical SK and are heavily pigmented, can sometimes resemble a small dark skin tag.

Due to their benign nature it is not necessary to remove SK’s unless they are in a place that friction may cause irritation or for cosmetic purposes.

We can remove them in clinic with either our cryo pen or fine wire diathermy with little discomfort or downtime.

Sebaceous hyperplasia, commonly mistaken for milia or solar comedones, is a benign skin tumour affecting the hair follicles of the forehead, cheeks and nose.

The lesions tend to be associated with an oilier skin type where the sebaceous glands within the hair follicle have enlarged and can be seen to have grown out onto the surface of the skin with a visible indentation in the centre which is the central hair follicle. Circulating androgen hormones also play a role in the development of this condition.

Typically appearing from around 40 years of age and older, these benign growths do not require treatment but are often removed for cosmetic reasons.

When removing sebaceous hyperplasia my treatment method of choice is fine wire diathermy although they can also be removed with certain lasers and by shave or surgical excision.

Topical retinoids can help manage the condition but for more severe cases oral isotretinoin may be needed.

How our skin ages is determined by so much more than just how many years we have been alive for which is referred to as chronological or intrinsic aging.

Intrinsic aging will begin to become most apparent between the ages of 50-60 years old, due to the hormonal shifts in the menopausal years and the loss of skin protective oestrogen these effects will be seen earlier in females.

Extrinsic aging is the aging that occurs due to external factors such as lifestyle choices and environmental factors, and can lead to accelerated aging of the skin in the earlier years.

Although we can not stop the aging process within the skin, nor should we be ashamed of aging as it is a blessing not gifted to everyone, we should still remember our skin has an important protective and thermoregulatory role not just an aesthetic one and as such deserves to be preserved as best we can throughout our lifetime.

A healthy balanced diet that provides many varied antioxidants and polyphenols as well as plenty of skin friendly healthy fats, minimal sun exposure particularly during the middle of the day, regular exercise, adequate sleep and finding ways to reduce stress levels can be of great benefit to the skin. As can applying topical Vitamin C and Vitamin A, peptides and a good quality SPF.

Treatments that help to maintain and rebuild skin collagen levels, such as micro needling, radio frequency skin tightening and laser genesis are also a great adjunct to maintaining a more youthful complexion.

Favre-Racouchot Syndrome or more commonly referred to as solar comedones, senile comedones, or smoker’s comedones.

This is a condition I often see skin and beauty therapists in professional forums I belong to, stumped at what they are seeing in their clients skin as it is not commonly seen within a beauty therapy setting. Some of the suggestions I see to what it might be can include milia or sebaceous hyperplasia but these are different again.

These lesions seen in an advanced aging skin, peaking between the ages of 60-80 develop slowly, they begin as a closed comedone presenting with a diffusely pale or yellow like hue on the skin of the face or neck. As the lesions grow and advance they can become what we refer to as an open comedone with the pore opening becoming blackened due to the trapped contents within the pore becoming oxidised just like in a traditional blackhead.

This condition is often seen in a skin with extensive sun damage which results in solar elasosis and may sometimes only occur on the side of the face of the car window of those who have spent a lot of time driving over the years, it can also appear in heavy smokers or highly glycated skin such as with those that have had a poor diet over a life time or who are diabetic due to poor sugar metabolism.

Treatment can include topical retinoids use and extractions with a qualified clinician or dermatologist. Prevention is better than a cure in this case though as there as been extensive damage done to the structure of the skin prior to these lesions occurring and is a timely reminder to wear sun protection and to look after your skin in your younger years, both externally and internally with a healthy diet and adequate essential fatty acid intake and not smoking if you want your best skin later in life 😊
