Still bloated — even after eating well? You’re not alone.

Many people assume that constipation, bloating, or gut discomfort is just “part of getting older” or the cost of a busy, stressful life.

But what if your gut was trying to tell you something?

At Good Life Naturopathy, I regularly see patients who feel frustrated after trying everything — from dietary changes to supplements — without lasting relief. Often, it’s not about what you’re eating, but how your gut is functioning.

In this new article, I explain the common (and often overlooked) root causes of gut symptoms like bloating, constipation and sluggish digestion — and why a personalised, microbiome-informed approach can make all the difference.

If you're tired of guessing and want to understand what’s going on beneath the surface, this is a great place to start.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that is involved in many processes in the body. Here are some of the potential health benefits of magnesium:

Promotes bone health: Magnesium is important for the formation and maintenance of healthy bones.

Supports heart health: The mineral may help regulate heart rhythm and blood pressure, and may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Reduces inflammation: Magnesium has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce inflammation and associated conditions such as arthritis.

Improves sleep quality: Magnesium may help improve sleep quality and quantity, which can have a positive impact on mood and overall health.

Reduces muscle cramps and spasms: Magnesium may help reduce muscle cramps and spasms, particularly in athletes or those who engage in strenuous physical activity.

It's important to note that while magnesium is generally safe, excessive intake can lead to side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps. It's always best to consult with a healthcare practitioner before taking any supplements, especially if you have an existing medical condition or are taking medication.

Echinacea is an herb that is commonly used for its potential health benefits. Here are some of the benefits of echinacea that have been studied and reported:

Immune-boosting properties: Echinacea is believed to enhance the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells, which can help fight off infections.

Anti-inflammatory effects: The herb may help reduce inflammation in the body, which can benefit conditions such as arthritis.

Cold and flu relief: Echinacea may help reduce the severity and duration of colds and flu, although more research is needed in this area.

Wound healing: Echinacea may help speed up the healing process of wounds and skin irritations.

Pain relief: The herb may have pain-relieving effects, which may be helpful for conditions such as toothaches and sore throats.

It's important to note that the effectiveness of echinacea may vary depending on the quality of the product and individual response. Also, echinacea may not be suitable for everyone, especially for those with autoimmune disorders or allergies to plants in the daisy family. It is always best to consult with a healthcare practitioner before taking any herbal supplements.

Here are some tips to increase your energy levels:

Get enough sleep: Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue and low energy levels.

Stay hydrated: Dehydration can cause fatigue and sluggishness. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can help increase energy levels, improve mood, and reduce stress.

Eat a balanced diet: Fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Avoid sugary, processed foods that can cause energy crashes.

Manage stress: Stress can drain your energy levels. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or journaling.

Take breaks: Take short breaks throughout the day to stretch, walk, or simply relax. This can help reduce mental and physical fatigue.

Limit caffeine and alcohol intake: While caffeine can provide a quick energy boost, too much can lead to jitters and anxiety. Similarly, alcohol can disrupt sleep and cause dehydration, leading to low energy levels.

By implementing these tips, you can increase your energy levels and feel more alert, focused, and productive throughout the day.

How much water should you drink? The amount of water you should drink depends on several factors, including your age, gender, activity level, and overall health. As a general guideline, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends the following daily water intake:

Men: Approximately 3 liters
Women: Approximately 2 liters

Keep in mind that these are general recommendations, and your individual needs may vary. Factors such as physical activity, hot weather, and pregnancy can increase your water needs. It's also important to drink water throughout the day, rather than trying to drink a large amount all at once.

It's best to listen to your body and drink water when you're thirsty. Your urine colour can also give you a good indication of whether you're drinking enough water. Light-yellow or clear urine typically indicates adequate hydration, while dark yellow or amber coloured urine may indicate dehydration.

It's important to stay properly hydrated to maintain healthy skin, regulate body temperature, support digestion, and aid in overall physical and mental performance.

As they say, prevention is better than cure. Here are some simple steps to prevent sunburn.

✅ Wear protective clothing: Wear loose, lightweight clothing that covers as much skin as possible, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, neck, and ears.

✅ Use sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and apply it generously and frequently, especially before outdoor activities.

✅ Seek shade: Avoid being in the sun during peak hours, which are typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. When outside, seek shade under trees, umbrellas, or awnings.

✅ Wear sunglasses: Wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them.

✅ Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help keep your skin hydrated and healthy, especially on hot days.

With the sun out it's important to prevent sunburn but if it's too late, here are some quick tips to treat sunburn effectively. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help hydrate your skin and speed up the healing process.

✅ Cool Compresses: Apply a cool compress to the affected area to help reduce pain and inflammation.

✅ Aloe Vera: Apply aloe vera gel to the sunburned area to help soothe the skin and promote healing.

✅ Herbal remedies: Consider taking anti-inflammatory herbs such as calendula, chamomile, or licorice root to help reduce redness and swelling.

✅ Vitamins and Minerals: Take vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C and E, that support skin health and healing.

✅ Avoid further sun exposure: Stay out of the sun until your sunburn has fully healed to prevent further damage.
