Today is Swallowing Awareness Day.
Swallowing is something most of us rarely think about, yet we do it between 500–700 times every day. For more than one million Australians, this everyday action is not simple, but a significant health challenge.
Swallowing difficulties, also known as dysphagia, can affect people across the lifespan and may impact eating, drinking, medication intake, and even breathing safety.
Today is about raising awareness, but also about recognising the vital role speech pathologists play in assessment, management, and care. Their work supports people to eat and drink safely, maintain independence, and stay connected to some of life’s most important social experiences.
At Melbourne Speech Pathology Clinic, we’re proud to contribute to this work every day, delivering thoughtful, evidence-based care to support our patients and their families. We also acknowledge the ongoing research and clinical leadership from the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the University of Melbourne, whose work continues to shape best practice and improve outcomes across the field.
Swallowing food and drink may be second nature, but for many, it takes expertise, care, and support. Today, we recognise the people behind that care and the clients we support.
