Being a fellow traveler on this parenting adventure, I want to share some thoughts from the last few weeks (which have been some of the hardest in my parenting gig so far.)
I know that any of y’all that have a strong-willed, SPICY kiddo of your own, will probably read this and close your eyes and shake your head in solidarity when I say: “My SPICY child just had eye surgery...and then a 2-week recovery at home.”

A lot of the fears I had emerged…and some didn’t.
But overall: it was just too much sensory EVERYTHING - and alllll pain meds were refused the first night - not even an ice pack was tolerated 😭🙈 ...It was very hard.
Why am I telling you all this?
You know how first responders or soldiers are often asked after a crisis...
“Wow! You were so calm in there! How did you navigate that?!”, and they say something like, “I don’t know – I was just on autopilot…I guess all my training just kicked in.”
These past few weeks, I have witnessed the power and quiet strength of training.
As I navigated some of the most challenging waters of my parenting journey, I found an anchor in my training.
It was so cool to see everything I preach be put into practice.
But it dawned on me: I’m referencing the entire library of all the books I’ve read, my education, and all the stuff I teach in my parenting programs…
Out of my entire catalog of content, I KNEW what 3 things I needed to focus on during that tough period...but….parenting a strong-willed child can sometimes lead us to focus on the wrong stuff.
Especially when we’re stressed.
And I was surprised that the 3 things I THOUGHT were the most important things…actually changed over the last few weeks.
So I wanted to share what I’ve learned: The whole experience taught me about focusing on what truly nurtures our kids and helps them through challenging times.
These 3 things were vital to not only my survival recently, but also in helping my daughter walk away with ideally the smallest amount of trauma possible.
