Hi all,

I'm writing to promote tomorrow evening's inaugural ANSA wellbeing initiative, pioneered by our Surg 3 fellow Georgina Riddough, aimed for the SET4 and 5s, aimed at performance optimisation for the fellowship exam.

Now that the dust has settled after the written, we'll be focusing on strategies to get the best out of the lead up to the written - and for the SET4s, ways to get into good habits in preparation for the exam.

This will be chaired by Sean Stevens, head of GATES, who holds his own interest in improving surgical education across the continuum and getting the best out of trainees, and he'll be joined by our recent FEX alumni discussing their strategies in the lead up to the exam - aimed at helping you all work smarter, not harder.

It'll run from 7:30 onwards, Wednesday 19th of April, via Teams, and while it's aimed at the SET4 and 5s, all are welcome to join.

We hope to see you there.

Steve Kunz

We would like to thank all the trainees who supported us for our 2022 Gratias Cena last night and especially those who travelled near and far. We appreciated your friendly faces and company so that we could continue this tradition of Austin-Northern Health training hub and ANSA to thank our trainers and everyone else who is involved for the great work of surgical training of both our SET and NSET registrars. See you again next year.

Dear all,

It's getting to that time of year where we, the Austin Northern Training Hub Surgical Association, throws an annual dinner called Gratias Cena as a way of commemorating the accomplishments of our surgical community & to give back to the surgeons and supervisors who have gone above and beyond to teach and train us (recalling the AM tutes, Saturday sessions and day to day teaching, all of which they do of their own time and volition).

Especially so, this year marks the first post-lockdown Gratias Cena and an opportunity to have a fun, social evening with colleagues and mentors alike given the circumstances of the last 2 years!

This year, Gratias Cena will be held on the 12th of November kicking off at 6.30pm at Top Paddock in Richmond. Attendance of consultant surgeons is covered by surgical trainees. We have set up an RSVP link to gauge interest and numbers, and further details regarding ticket prices (for both ANSA and non-ANSA members) will be confirmed within the coming 2-3 weeks.

We would greatly appreciate your confirmation / registration of interest via our link - https://gratiascena2022.rsvpify.com ! Please don't hesitate to reach via PM for further details.

We would like to invite you to the inaugural VERITAS Journal Club. An exciting initiative linking three arms of our acronym, Education, Research and Training.

For many of us, it can be challenging to seek out the literature that drives many of our current surgical practices. But in the relaxed atmosphere of a Tuesday evening every month we are hoping to engage your time to answer the theme of our club this year, “Why do we do what we do?”… Why are some lap cholecystectomies done that way, why do some use prep with alcohol and others not, why do some surgeons use drains and others not, why do some surgeons use regional anaesthesia?

Finding the article, even the time, to appraise the literature of every single question, takes too long. But we hope that this year, we can set aside some time to look at some simple questions that are asked of actual relevance to us, to enhance our understanding of why we do what we do.

Our first journal club will review:

Strasberg’s Landmark paper on the Critical View of Safety in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (attached)

When: First Journal Club Meet - 19th April 2022, 7:30pm - 8:00pm. See affixed agenda for the year with provisional dates.

What: Strasberg, S and Brunt, L, "Rationale and Use of the Critical View of Safety in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy”

Why: Relevant content, to answer foundational questions on our everyday practice
