There are many women who never have the opportunity to give birth to children who are still mothers. Pregnancy loss is more common that we think, often endured in silence, and never our fault. In those few weeks or months of pregnancy, we create in our hearts an entire life... who will they look like? What will they be like? Where will they sleep? What will they dream?
When there is a loss, this is the loss we suffer.

Each Mother’s Day I think of those who do not have a child to wake up overnight to, to lift out of the cot in the morning or pick up from school in the afternoon. They may not have the physical presence of a child, but they must not be forgotten. They are still mothers.

For those still on the fertility and pregnancy journey I wish you success.
For those whose days have passed I wish you peace and joy in your life

It’s world breastfeeding week. This is a topic close to my heart (pun intended 😉) both professionally and personally.

Breastfeeding never came easily to me. My feeding journeys all involved months of ni**le trauma, low supply, triple feeding, medication, lactation consultant support, expressing, supply line feeding, bottle washing and sooooo much fenugreek I could be smelt from 3 suburbs away🙈

What have I learnt?

It’s uncommon for things to just ‘click’ in those early days. If it does, great! But if not, you are absolutely not alone. Likewise, your experience in the first days/weeks is often not reflective of what things will be like further down the track.

The advice/opinions you are given in the early days by well-meaning midwives, family and friends can be confusing. Just when you think you have it sorted someone else comes in and suggests you change! I found it helpful to shift my perspective from one of frustration (“Everyone is telling my something different!” to one of learning (“This just shows there is no one “right” way”).

Similarly, if you see a lactation consultant (LC) and they aren’t the right fit for you, try another LC. There are many approaches and styles and it can take time to find the right support.

Any cookies that you EVER bake should be clearly labelled Lactation Cookies, regardless of if you are breastfeeding. This is a highly effective guarantee of a good cookie supply just for you 🫢

Though we may agonise over feeding our baby, nobody will ask your 10 year old if they were breastfed. In fact, my 10 year old son is mortified that this was once how he received nutrition 😂

When in the trenches, sometimes establishing an end point/end date can be helpful. Such as “if I feel this isn’t working for us by the time, I give us permission to stop”.

Above all, please be KIND to yourselves. While the early days and weeks are hard for most, if the challenges of breastfeeding are preventing you from enjoying your baby on an ongoing basis it may be worth taking a step back and reflecting on whether this is working for you and baby.

COVID-19 VACCINATION UPDATE:
From 12/9/21: Priority vaccination for pregnant women >24 weeks.

In the words of my colleague A/Prof Ryan Hodges:

“It's no longer, "What do I avoid in pregnancy to keep my baby safe? It's what do I do in pregnancy to keep my baby safe? And that is to get vaccinated."
