"When you are diagnosed with cancer, it is not unusual to feel powerless, perplexed or even overwhelmed about your treatment options.

"But for me, once the initial shock of my bladder cancer diagnosis subsided, I really wanted to be proactive in decision-making about my treatment. I decided to be a co-pilot, not a passenger, in tackling my health challenge.

"I set out to learn how best to navigate our complex health system and what questions I needed to ask my medical team. This informed better conversations with the team, enabling me to discuss the latest research and be actively involved in decision-making around my treatment."

Our CEO Prof Grant McArthur AO told our successful Consumer Engagement Forum this week that Victoria could be the first jurisdiction in the world to remove the gap in cancer outcomes between regional and metropolitan areas,.

The VCCC Alliance Chief Executive called on the Victorian cancer sector to aspire for equitable cancer outcomes across the state, at the alliance's first ever consumer engagement forum held in a regional area.

Regional Victorians are 10 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than those living in major cities, and 15 per cent more likely to die, according to new data from 2023 released by the Victorian Cancer Registry this week.

Thanks again Bendigo Health Loddon Mallee Integrated Cancer Service (LMICS) for partnering with us for the event!

Next Monday 9 December is our Consumer Engagement Forum and this year we are excited to host it in partnership with Bendigo Health and Loddon Mallee Integrated Cancer Service (LMICS). Significantly, the forum will be held for the first time in regional Victoria, at Bendigo Health. It builds on our collective efforts to strengthen local regional consumer advocacy, as well as effective engagement practice.

This year’s forum is dedicated to advancing equity in regional cancer care through building lasting partnerships with consumers and community.

We're incredibly excited about what can be achieved when more diverse voices are heard.

Fifteen Victorians who have experienced cancer – consumers – have joined newly-established working groups to play an integral role in the $1.6 million Victorian government-funded statewide Cancer Consumer-led Research Program.

The program aims to enhance the impact of integrating the lived experience to cancer care, research and education in Victoria and is a collaboration between VCCC Alliance, Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium, Regional Trials Network, Cancer Council Victoria and The University of Melbourne.

The VCCC Alliance will next week release a holistic framework that seeks to support the Victorian cancer sector to embed a culture of equity.

The Cancer Equity Framework, to be launched in a live webinar on Monday 9 September, highlights the historical power structures in research and healthcare systems that have prevented underserved communities from receiving the best cancer care, and provides a roadmap to support all those working in the cancer sector to be attuned to equity in practice.

We'd love you to join us for this pivotal event.

Featuring:
💠 Professor Jennifer Philip University of Melbourne
💠 Associate Professor Kalinda Griffiths
💠 Dr Beverley Woon Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

📢 EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST NOW OPEN!

Are you interested in helping pioneer a consumer leadership program?

If you have a lived experience of cancer as a patient or carer you could be part of a groundbreaking effort to amplify consumers as leaders across Victoria in an exciting consumer-led research partnership.

We're looking for a diverse range of consumer voices to be part of three working groups for the Cancer Consumer-led Research Partnership, a Victorian government-funded initiative involving consumers and staff from the VCCC Alliance, Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium, Regional Trials Network, Cancer Council Victoria and the University of Melbourne.

Our aim is to enhance consumer engagement practices through collaboration and consumer-led approaches, and importantly, develop a statewide network of consumer leaders while building consumer, and organisational capability.

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths globally and it is very hard to diagnose. I want to shift the timelines for a cancer diagnosis, so that people have a higher chance of a cure from an earlier stage cancer.”

Dr Jianrong Zhang, or JR as he likes to be called, has studied the timeliness of lung cancer diagnosis and treatment in Victoria, as part of the VCCC Alliance Data Connect project.
