⚠️ Let’s talk about falls ⚠️

Have you noticed an older loved one feeling unsteady or using furniture for support? Starting a simple conversation could help them stay safe and independent.

After two falls, Elaine was referred to the Falls and Balance (FAB) Clinic at the RMH, where she was supported by a multidisciplinary team including Katrina, Occupational Therapist; Dr Eric, Geriatrician; Melissa, Physiotherapist; and Dr Erika, Psychologist.

An in-home assessment led by Katrina identified trip hazards and simple changes, including shower rails, which Elaine loves.

“Step-by-step, supported by the FAB’s multidisciplinary team, it’s wonderful that people like Elaine can rebuild confidence, move more safely, and get back to what matters most”, said Dr Erika.

Elaine is now continuing her exercises at home, keeping up her strength and balance.

👟 Do you want to run for FREE and raise funds for the RMH?

We still have Charity Superstar spots up for grabs!

It’s simple: pick your distance (5K, 10K or half marathon), create your fundraising page, and once you raise $700, you’re in the race, on us.

Last year we raised over $25,000 for Allied Health. And this year we are aiming to do it again, because every early morning, every sore muscle, every kilometre is supporting world-class healthcare.

Meet Nathan, a Critical Care superstar!

Nathan has been with the RMH since his graduate year, building his skills across general medicine and trauma before finding his path in the Intensive Care Unit.

For Nathan, it’s the teamwork that makes ICU special: “There’s a real sense of teamwork here. Everyone’s invested, everyone’s learning from each other, and we all come together to do the best we can for our patients.”

In the ICU, it’s a true team effort, with nurses, doctors, allied health and support staff all working side by side.

“You see it when a patient comes in from emergency. There are people everywhere, working together, and the amount you can do in that short time is incredible.”

"When Leanne got the call about her son's accident, her heart dropped. "I actually thought it was the last of my son," she said, holding back tears.

Tashawn, a Wamba Wamba, Mutti Mutti and Wadi Wadi man, had been involved in a serious motorbike accident, breaking his knee, pelvis and injuring his arm. Leanne made the journey from Swan Hill to Melbourne to be by his side.

From the moment they arrived at the RMH, both felt supported. For Leanne, having the First Nations Health Unit nearby made a real difference. "It's always awesome to have mob with mob and helping each other, especially when we can all relate to the same thing," she says.

Lucy and Paige from the First Nations Health Unit visited Tashawn throughout his stay, checking in, providing support and making sure he and his family felt at home. "It means a lot, them coming in and seeing me," Tashawn says.

After two weeks of care, Tashawn was prepared to head home. "It's just a good place," he said. "Thank you to everyone for the help."

Today, we pause to honour those who served.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital has a long-standing relationship with Australia's defence forces. Sister Jane Bell, who served as matron of Melbourne Hospital from 1910 to 1934, was one of the many medical professionals who answered the call.

When World War I broke out, she was appointed principal matron of the First Australian General Hospital in Egypt. Her work there helped reshape how the Australian Army Medical and Nursing Services were organised.

On her return, she established the hospital's first preliminary nursing training school and spent her career advocating for nurses to be recognised as trained professionals. She called for centralised training, better pay and conditions, and pushed back against proposals that would have reduced nursing to a lesser-skilled role.

Today, several staff from the RMH continue that tradition, serving in the Australian Defence Force alongside their work at the hospital.

Lest we forget.

Meet Dr Haris, one of our Basic Physician Trainees.

Haris is currently rotating through general medicine while also working on infectious diseases research with his mentors.

“I’ve felt really supported by the registrars and consultants, and I’ve loved being able to care for patients with such a wide range of presentations,” he says.

Our BPT program offers clinical training across major metropolitan and regional centres through the Greater Western Consortium, including Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation, Western Health, Grampians Health Ballarat, Albury Wodonga Health, and Northeast Health Wangaratta.

One of Haris’ highlights was his internship year in Horsham: “It gave me a different view of medicine, getting to know the local community and even joining the run club.”

Applications for our BPT1 Program close this Sunday.

A flashback to over 60 years ago!

This photo of our old laundry dispensary, located in the basement, was taken sometime between 1960 and 1969.

Today, our pharmacy, food services, linen teams and more use the tunnels to keep the hospital operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A new electronic Health Assessment Questionnaire (eHAQ) is now available for all planned surgical patients on the Health Hub - supporting safe, timely and person-centred care.

Our Health Hub patient portal is a secure mobile and web application that lets you view and manage information about your care at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and other Parkville health services.

The eHAQ will replace the paper intake form, and by completing the eHAQ early, it ensures your clinical team has the information they need to plan for your care.

Because of you, it’s here.

Thanks to the generosity of our community through the Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation, a new CT scanner is now supporting care at the RMH Emergency Department.

For the 87,000 people who come through ED each year, this means faster answers, clearer diagnoses, and more timely care when it matters most, especially for patients experiencing trauma or stroke.

“In situations where time is really important, having that second CT scanner means we could get through twice the amount of scans. So it’s all done quicker, which will have a real flow on effect in the hospital,” said Dr Kate Martin, Deputy Director of Trauma.

And behind every scan is a person, a story, a life.

“Without my emergency doctors, my neurosurgeons and the medical equipment at the RMH I wouldn’t be here to tell my story today, and neither would my daughter,” said Brianna, a stroke survivor.

Thank you for helping make this possible.

Side effects may include instant besties 👩🏻‍⚕️

Meet Dr Lauren and Dr Nada, who are both completing their Basic Physician Training at the RMH. They met when Lauren was a Year 4 med student and Nada an intern, and quickly became close, backing each other through study, ward rounds and long shifts.

Through the program, they’ve worked across cardiology, stroke, neurology, infectious diseases, nephrology, bone marrow transplant and more.

Lauren, interested in endocrinology and nephrology, says the transplant rotations have been a highlight, with strong exposure at one of Australia’s largest kidney transplant services.

“It was a really lovely culture, with excellent learning opportunities and support. Our mentors are invested in teaching and supporting our education,” says Nada.

Looking for a supportive place to train? Applications are now open for the RMH Basic Physician Training Year 1!
