The carer does not have to use any physical force in the dressing process. This greatly reduces the risk of any unintended injury to shoulders, knees, hips or the neck of your staff.
No rolling or lifting is required and allows just one carer to manage the task of dressing/un******ng.
In addition, the carer is standing in front of the person being dressed which lessens any anxiety which often happens when the wearer cannot see what is happening and this then makes him/her unsettled.
A specialist nurse once said to me: “All the very best equipment will not make a true difference unless the appropriate (adaptive) clothing is used in conjunction.” Many nurses around Australia have since confirmed to me that this is particularly true in High Care, Palliative Care and Rehab Care.

Petal Back Clothing in District Docklands is the kind of business that helps people who are at their most vulnerable, which is why I have chosen it as my Good News Story for the Week.

Have you heard of adaptive clothing? It’s not something many of us talk about day to day, but for those who need adaptive clothing, Petal Back has been life changing.

Linda Dugan founded Petal Back 30 years ago after caring for her grandmother when she noticed that there weren’t many stylish and dignified clothes for people requiring care.

“The words my nanna used were, Linda, make me look as best as you possibly can, because I can no longer put on the jewellery, or the lipstick, or the scarf,” says Linda.

“Adaptive clothing is designed to prevent injury and pain for someone with limited mobility, when someone is being dressed and undressed by another person.”
The clothing has no harsh fastenings, and nothing that will cause the wearer any discomfort. It also protects the nurse or carer who is assisting.

There are a range of attractive patterns and colours to choose from, so that the wearer can retain their sense of style in comfort.

Visits to Petal Back are by appointment only so that Linda can give full attention to her customers, and also provide them with a calm environment during what is often a challenging period in their lives.

She says the feedback she has received has been extraordinary. “People love that I can make a difference,” says Linda.

“If we can go out of our way to help people and make a difference, I think the whole world could be a better place.”
