How Much Do We Value Mental Health ? Insights from John Rousvanis
How much do we value mental health in this highly technological and fast-paced era? We can find ourselves in a never-ending rush, afraid to put down our phones, and always needing to be present online. Consumed by dealing with finances, we tend to spend on goods and services, holidays, bills, material possessions, gym memberships, anti-aging serums, cosmetics, and more. While these things may provide short-term relief, we often neglect the one thing that allows us to experience and appreciate all this: our mental health. How much do we invest in that?
Recent studies from the WEF have shown that the levels of suicidal behaviours, stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression, self-harm, and substance abuse have risen, significantly impacting global mental health. We may not even be aware that our current thought patterns and behaviours may be slowly deteriorating our mental and physical health. With this in mind, it brings us back to the question: how much time and money do we invest in our mental health?
If your answer is "not much," here is a simple, cost-effective approach to checking in on your mental health. A great place to start is your workplace, where you spend most of your week.
Most respectable and responsible companies and organizations offer complimentary EAP services (Employee Assistance Programs). These services, though often underutilised due to untrue stigmas, are free and fully confidential. There's no need to worry about your boss or co-workers finding out personal information. By utilising these services, you can join many others who are taking initiative to encourage mental health awareness, gaining benefits such as better coping strategies, a healthier state of mind, improved relationships, renewed inspiration for work and life, and contributing to a better work environment.
All it requires is an investment of your time. With countless articles, research, and findings highlighting the benefits and success stories surrounding mental health issues, the question arises once more: why aren't you investing in mental health, especially when it is needed the most?
