From classroom dreams to lab-grown breakthroughs 🧪

Dr Kate Firipis once wanted to be a teacher, inspired by a childhood curiosity about the world around her.

Today at SVI, she’s part of a team working on lab-grown skin that could transform recovery for patients with severe wounds. The goal is simpler healing, with fewer complications, less trauma, and better quality of life for people who need it most.

“When I was little, my Dad used to help me with projects on everything from flowers to ducks and rabbits, and I wanted to be a teacher so I could share everything I learnt. That same curiosity in the world has stayed with me, and I’m now lucky to both learn from experienced researchers and teach students about tissue engineering at SVI.”

Every scientist has a story đź“–

Whether they always dreamed of working in medicine, or imagined becoming zookeepers and palaeontologists, each of our researchers started with a curiosity about the world around them.

Today, that curiosity is driving discoveries in cancer, diabetes, bone health and more at SVI.

His work spans initiatives from delaying and preventing the onset of the disease, to helping people with type 1 diabetes make their own insulin again using islet transplants.

Tom was presented with the Breakthrough T1D Luminary Award at the Immunology of Diabetes Society (IDS) 2026 congress by Dorota Pawlak, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer at Breakthrough T1D Australia.

Reports of substantial weight loss and improved metabolic health have fuelled enormous interest in GLP-1 medications. But are they truly a universal solution, or is the reality more complex?

SVI’s Professor John Wentworth, endocrinologist and Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Immunology & Diabetes, examines the science behind the headlines, weighing the theories against the real clinical evidence.
