Behind every dementia diagnosis is a person who still wants to cook their meals, enjoy hobbies, and spend time with loved ones. Occupational Therapists work alongside clients and families to make those everyday moments easier, safer, and more meaningful.
Living with dementia can be difficult, but research shows that practical, evidence-based strategies make a real difference:
✔ Simplify routines - Break down tasks into clear, simple steps or use visual cues (like labels on cupboards or checklists) to reduce stress and confusion.
✔ Adapt the home environment - Safer lighting, removing trip hazards, and using colour contrasts or signage help prevent accidents and promote independence.
✔ Introduce memory aids - Calendars, talking clocks, reminder apps, and adaptive devices support orientation and help keep important routines on track.
✔ Maintain meaningful activities - Staying engaged in hobbies like gardening, music, or cooking supports mood, cognitive stimulation, and quality of life. Even small adjustments (like raised planters or adaptive tools) make activities more accessible.
✔ Plan for safety - From grab rails in bathrooms to decluttering walkways, proactive safety planning reduces fall risks and empowers people to stay at home longer.
✔ Build consistent routines - Predictable daily schedules reduce anxiety and confusion, giving structure to the day and helping people feel more secure.
✔ Support carers too - Over 1.6 million Australians are currently involved in dementia care. Training, education, and guidance from OTs reduces caregiver stress, builds confidence, and improves wellbeing for the whole family (NIHR, 2024).
💡 Small changes. Big difference.
