Are you a ‘middle-aged’ man & feel like you’re just hanging in there?

Ever heard of andropause, also known as male menopause? Commonly starting in the 40s, andropause is a normal hormonal transition where testosterone levels begin to decline.

What are some common symptoms?
-Low energy, low motivation or drive
-Mood swings (yes, men get them too…)
-Loss of libido & erectile dysfunction
-Reduction in muscle strength
-Slower speed of recovery
-Trouble sleeping

How can it be managed?
🌿Focus on lifestyle changes - healthy diet (including reducing alcohol, sugar & processed foods), exercise, stopping smoking, stress management & quality sleep are very important for your physical & emotional health
🌿Testing - working with a holistic health care practitioner to establish levels of testosterone, vitamins & minerals in your body. This can identify deficiencies or excesses that might be affecting your health & can help tailor dietary changes or supplements to meet your body’s needs
🌿Talking - many men find the biggest hurdle in managing andropause is talking about changes with their partner or health professional. It’s essential to be open & honest & express how you’re feeling both physically & emotionally. Seeking understanding, acceptance & support from loved ones can help this be such an important time to reset relationships. Identity shifts are common, and counselling can provide tools to navigate changes. This period of physical & emotional change can be the perfect time to work on a new belief system & plan for the next leg of your life journey

I’m not an expert on andropause but I see the impact it has on men & their relationships. As a spiritual counsellor I value the importance of raising awareness & supporting men & their families to understand & navigate this very normal part of aging. Getting older doesn’t mean losing who you are. It can be a wonderful opportunity to understand yourself at a deeper level & explore what’s important to you.

Navigating andropause doesn’t have to be done alone. It can be a supported team effort that helps you feel empowered to grow into the next phase of your life.

The Elevate Spirituality podcast episode ‘Elevating health and fitness' is now live!

In this episode, Callum, a fitness and exercise programming specialist with over 30 years’ experience in the fitness industry, joins me to start a conversation around the importance of exercise for middle-aged women.

Callum provides an overview of some of the health benefits of exercise and getting started with a fitness routine. He emphasises the importance of strength training, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the positive effects of exercise on mental well-being.

The conversation also highlights the need for accountability and setting achievable goals to foster a successful exercise journey.

One of my favourite parts of our discussion was around body image and finding acceptance with the changes to our body shape being part of the normal aging process. It’s helpful to shift our focus from how we look to what we're able to do, focusing on healthy habits and routines which impact how we feel about ourselves…healthier state of mind, happier, healthier lifestyle and vice versa.

Following on from my post on menopause, I often get asked about my favourite oils to support mood & sleep. I could talk for hours about this but keeping it very simple, these are my faves:

🌿Lavender Peace – I adore this warm, floral, soothing, calming, grounding scent. Use throughout the day applied to skin as a perfume & in the diffuser at night to support sleep

🌿Peace - helps promote feelings of peace, reassurance, & contentment. This has a rich, earthy scent. I like the pre-diluted roller

🌿Valerian – a grounding, earthy aroma. One of the oldest & most studied benefits of Valerian is its ability to improve the quality of sleep. Honestly, I don’t love the smell but love the benefits, so I apply to the bottom of my feet & back of neck to support sleep

🌿Lavender Peace Stick+Valerian – this is a great way to combine lavender peace & valerian in a cost effective, easy to apply stick. It smells delightful & can be applied to wrists, chest, & bottoms of feet

🌿Vetiver – a very deep, woody, smoky aroma. Traditionally used in aromatherapy to assist mind relaxation & is highly valued for its soothing effects. I like to mix this with other oils in the diffuser or apply to soles of feet

🌿Balance – a warm, woody aroma, known as the grounding blend, helps create a sense of calm & relaxation

🌿Adaptiv – a mix of sweet, citrus & floral with the primary benefit of soothing the mind & relaxing the body. This is great diffused or diluted & applied to skin

🌿Anything CITRUS to energise & uplift mood, & to refresh the energy in a room!

🌿Petal diffuser - has a soft white light making it ideal for night time use (or turn off light completely). Can cover up to 30m2 & has 3 time settings

🌿Carrier oil - dilute essential oils for application to skin (I use dōTERRA non-greasy fractionated coconut oil)

Let's talk menopause...

Do you love it or hate it?

No more periods, no risk of unplanned pregnancy…
Versus hot flushes, brain fog, sweats, mood swings, weight gain and much more...

Being supported through this time is invaluable. It's essential to have open honest communication with your loved ones, share how you’re feeling and express your needs. It can be a very important time to reset relationships.

Menopause often ties in with moving into the fifties. This age can be a time of more freedom and celebration but can also be a time of conflict.

Working on your belief system, values and planning for the next leg of your journey is very helpful during this time.

What will you focus on achieving now?
How will you find fulfilment?
Where will you discover adventure in your life?

Do more of what you love…

This was a promise I made to myself last year.

I’ve been investing in my growth for many years, but the shift to investing deeper into love has been a more recent focus. My trip to Europe to further my knowledge of the spiritual renaissance, connecting more deeply with my guide, building new relationships, and ongoing professional development have all been avenues to grow more love in my life.
