Mum Mood Booster

Mum Mood Booster MumMoodBooster and Mum2BMoodBooster are evidence-based e-treatments designed to help women anywhere

MumMoodBooster is the only Australian e-treatment designed and validated specifically for the clinical treatment of perinatal depression. Unlike most e-treatments for depression, MumMoodBooster is not a series of “slides” containing text and cartoon stories with suggestions for “homework”. Instead, MumMoodBooster is an active, six-session cognitive-behavioural therapy treatment program, closely co

mparable to the therapy delivered in traditional face-to-face psychology sessions, but entirely under the control of the user. It allows women to work through their own issues and develop strategies for dealing with these. Low-intensity sms messages provide regular contact, advice and encouragement to remain motivated in completing the treatment. Changes in symptoms of depression are regularly monitored throughout the program. Women can invite their partners to access a partner website with information on perinatal depression and for managing their own emotional health.

🌐 Digital Mental Health in Perinatal Care: Supporting Families Anytime, Anywhere 💙

At the Parent-Infant Research Institute (PIRI), we're transforming how parents are supported during the critical perinatal period—through pregnancy and the first 1000 days after birth.

Our evidence-based, nationally accredited programs like MumMoodBooster and DadBooster provide accessible, effective support for women, men and clinicians—anytime, anywhere. These digital tools complement face-to-face care, helping overcome barriers like time, distance, and stigma.

🔹 Can be used to complement existing supports, or when access to face-to-face services is limited.
🔹 Proven effective in scientific studies and has been shown to be as effective as face-to-face psychology treatment.
🔹 Tailored support for both mums and dads: Helping reduce isolation, improve emotional wellbeing, and strengthen parenting roles.
🔹 Clinician integration: Tools like the Clinician Portal enable timely, coordinated care.

Digital care doesn't replace clinicians—it amplifies their impact. Together, we’re building a stronger, more responsive mental health system for families across Australia. 💛

We are thrilled to announce that the Parent-Infant Research Institute (PIRI) has secured grant funding to continue delivering MumMoodBooster and significantly expand the reach of DadBooster. These two nationally accredited digital mental health programs are dedicated to supporting the mental health of parents during the perinatal period.

This exciting news was shared by The Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care, as part of the Australian Government’s $135.2 million Digital Mental Health Program. This substantial investment ensures free, high-quality mental health support is available to all Australians, whenever and wherever they need it.

Even more exciting, this funding is shining a much-needed spotlight on the mental health of dads. Through the DadBooster national online treatment program, we’re tackling the critical issue of postnatal depression in fathers—a group that has often been overlooked. DadBooster mirrors best-practice cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of postnatal men. Together with other wonderful initiatives supporting dads, we’re committed to providing valuable, life-changing support for every Australian parent.

We extend our congratulations to all the organisations and initiatives funded, and, most importantly, celebrate the many parents and families who will benefit from these life-changing services. We also want to express our gratitude to the Australian government for this investment—a vital step toward improving perinatal mental health nationwide and expanding access to those who need it most.

Men can experience depression after the birth of a child too.

Many people are surprised to learn that approximately 5% men experience anxiety and depression when expecting a new baby and 10% experience anxiety or depression when they become a father. While mums often experience depression very soon after their baby’s birth, for dads depression can develop more gradually over the first year, with most experiencing depression when their baby is between 3 and 6 months. Despite feeling low, many fathers find it difficult to reach out for help.

DadBooster is a free online program designed to help dads who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is the first program of its kind in Australia, and we are looking for 50 dads to help us evaluate its effectiveness.

The DadBooster study might be for you…

If you are a dad over 18 with a baby under 12 months old, and you are not currently receiving treatment for depression, you may be eligible to participate in the trial.
