Nonie Carr - Enhance Life Psychology

Nonie Carr - Enhance Life Psychology Working together to live an enhanced life.

In April 2017 I opened the doors of Enhance Life Psychology.I started operating within a multi-disciplinary clinic in Prahran. In late 2020 I move Enhance Life Psychology to Albert Park and work within Crawley House on Montague St on the edges of the Village. I love working as a psychologist as it aligns with my values of honesty, fairness and hope, as well as my desire to help others. I’ve been a secondary school teacher and have worked as a school psychologist in a girls’ secondary school for almost 10 years, while also working in private practice. One of the things I enjoy about working with people, and teaching is seeing that lightbulb moment, that “ahaha...” when things click, there is understanding, and a shift occurs.
I’m a Counselling Psychologist which means that there is a focus on mental health and wellbeing. I help you to live your best life; to live your life enhanced. I help you to find your strengths and together we work to find a new and helpful perspective, to explore different strategies and behaviours, and to develop a helpful understanding of your history and experiences. I help you identify goals and how to work towards them. I help you get the best from your performance in your chosen field of expertise. I help adults and adolescents to find ways to manage their worry or anxiety & stress to enhance their ability to perform at their best, whether in sport, the performing arts, at work or at home. I help you find ways to shift unhelpful thinking styles and to find a more helpful perspective. I help you to discover your values and to set goals to work towards that will help you to get the best out of your life; to live your life enhanced. When you’d like to have a conversation with me about how I might be able to help you, send a message or contact me through my website (link in my bio). Let me help you enhance your life. Performance rarely unfolds as a perfect sequence.
Even with preparation, skill, and strong partnership, there are misreads, emotional reactions, and moments of recalibration.
What matters most is the capacity to reset and continue.
I’ll be sharing a new article next week on perfectionism and performance.

Much of performance in adult life happens out of view.
Working towards long-term goals.Making difficult decisions.Sustaining effort without immediate feedback or recognition.
These quieter spaces can be surprisingly demanding, particularly for people who hold themselves to high internal standards.
I’ve shared a new article exploring the psychology of performing without an audience and how we continue moving in meaningful directions even when progress is not immediately visible.

Without visible results.
These quieter spaces can be more demanding than they first appear.

I recently shared a short reflection from a swim in the Bay while visibility was low and jellyfish were around.

That experience became the starting point for a longer piece about uncertainty, anxiety, and how we continue to move toward what matters even when outcomes cannot be fully known.

This is something that comes up often in therapeutic work. Many thoughtful, capable people find their lives gradually narrowing as they try to manage uncertainty rather than live alongside it.

Lion’s mane jellyfish were present across the Bay in very high numbers in December. They have become more scattered recently, but there are still some around.

Their sting is unpleasant. I have been fortunate to avoid being stung so far, despite encountering them multiple times.

Visibility in the water has been poor lately.
There is a quiet awareness while swimming that something unseen could be there.

The mind scans. The body stays alert.
But I keep swimming.

Much of anxiety operates in this space.
Not immediate danger.
Possible danger.

Psychological flexibility is not the absence of fear. It is the capacity to continue, with appropriate caution, in the presence of uncertainty.

High-pressure situations often feel hardest when what’s at stake matters deeply, not just the task itself, but what it represents.
Anxiety in these moments doesn’t mean something is wrong. It often reflects meaning, values, and care.
I’ve written a new article exploring how values influence performance under pressure, why anxiety can intensify when things feel personal, and how values-based approaches can support performance without needing to eliminate discomfort.
You can read it here: https://enhancelife.com.au/values-and-performance-under-pressure/

We often think preparation for high-pressure moments means thinking differently, rehearsing mentally, or trying to feel more confident.
While those approaches can help, they’re most effective when paired with physiological support.
When pressure rises, the nervous system plays a central role in whether we stay engaged, flexible, and responsive, or shift into tension, over-monitoring, or withdrawal.
This article explores how preparation that builds familiarity with anxiety, supports regulation, and is anchored in meaning can help performance hold together when demand is high.

Being hard on yourself can feel like motivation — until it starts to interfere with focus, confidence, and performance.
Self-criticism often increases internal pressure rather than supporting steadiness under demand.
I’ve shared a new article exploring how self-criticism affects performance, and what helps create a more workable internal environment under pressure.

✨ Professional Update ✨
I’m pleased to share that I’ve recently been endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist, alongside my existing endorsement as a Counselling Psychologist.

Seventeen years of practice has taught me this: the person in front of me is never the problem. Each individual brings their own strengths and experiences that can be drawn on to create change and live more fully. A diagnosis may describe what someone is going through, but it never defines who they are.

This endorsement is meaningful—not only as recognition of my work, but because it allows me to offer clients greater access to therapy through higher rebates. That was my strongest motivation in applying. I’m grateful to my colleagues and to the AAPi for their support in making this possible.

💬 If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, this might be the right time to reach out. You can contact me via my website - www.enhancelife.com.au

A blank page, mind also blank, clock ticking, fingers tapping... will that idea come? what if it doesn’t? the nothing in my mind expands... silence and the ticking clock, the tug of other tasks pulls at my mind... there has to be an idea somewhere... the empty page continues to stare at me... my feet start twitching and the pull of other tasks gets stronger... ok... done... I’ll come back... the page remains empty and I get up and start doing other things that ‘need’ doing...
📝
I was supposed to be writing something completely different… (part of a storytelling course I’m doing)… but you know that blank feeling… you’re not alone. I’m happy to sit in the struggle with you… whatever that struggle might be. We can explore it together.
