In the Pilates industry there has been an explosion of new franchises teaching group Reformer based exercises to the general public. It is the hottest fitness craze.
I want to make it clear that most of these group classes are NOT Pilates but rather a fitness experience using the Pilates Reformer.
Most of the instructors of these classes have very limited knowledge of the Pilates Method as a whole.
There is a real concern for public safety in general. Many of the training courses the Group Reformer instructors receive do not include enough time for them to develop skills to help them teach safely or effectively. Some training is completed in less than 50 hours.
Most of these instructors and the general public are unaware that the Reformer is just one piece equipment used in the Pilates method.
A Comprehensively Trained Pilates Teacher has more than 450 hours of baseline training if they have done a reputable course. They are trained in Mat, Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair and a variety of barrels and other sn]mall pieces of equipment.
They would also have learned contraindications to a variety of common injuries. These teachers have learned how to teach clients with various conditions and how to modify exercises accordingly.
A teacher will also know how to help clients integrate what they learn into every day life.
I urge you to ask where the instructor or teacher has been trained. Ask them what level of experience they have and if they are doing regular continuing education.
Reach out to me if you have questions or if you would like to up-skill your knowledge as a teacher.
