Lastest blog on getting enough calcium when you are dairy free- replacing dairy with figs or almonds or spinach - will that provide enough calcium?

Taking dairy out of your diet also means taking dairy calcium out of the diet, which can be a problem if not adequately replaced. Removing dairy also removes some vitamin D, which is a double whammy as vitamin D is important for boosting your calcium absorption from the gut. They tend to wok togethe...

Spot light on rice crackers: quick blog on a series I am doing on foods used as part of the FAILSAFE, low salicylates, amines, glutamates elimination dietary trial:

Sometimes PLAIN rice crackers are not always as plain as they seem.

In fact when I see that plain rice crackers contain soy powder- I am almost bowled over.

Have a read and check your own rice crackers you are eating- are they really plain?

People with suspected natural food chemical sensitivities (salicylates, amines, glutamates and some food additives such as artificial colours and msg) may undertake the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital elimination diet (RPAH elimination) which is sometimes called the FAILSAFE diet as a way of diagnosing...

This was a big blog- thought I would write up a quick summary of histamine versus amines as I am often explaining how these terms relate to each other- but it was bigger than I thought! Here is the link for those dealing with amine sensitivities with your Bub - and wonder where histamine fits into all of it...

https://www.thefoodintolerancedietitian.com.au/post/are-amines-the-same-as-histamines

Nothing like a good in depth examination of an oft asked question.

Are amines the same as histamines or are they different. Amines and histamines do have a lot in common but also a lot of differences. You find them both in food, but there is a whole lot more to this story.

If you or your baby has an IgE or non IgE to an allergen then sometimes other allergens can be an issue due to the similarities in the protein and this is called cross reactivity.
When cow’s milk is an issue, often soy milk is as well. How often I see mum’s taking out cow’s milk from their diet and while seeing improvement in their baby’s symptoms, ongoing issues occur until soy protein is also removed.
-
Where cow’s milk is an issue- other mammalian milks are also likely to be a problem - such as 🐐 milk.
-
We forget peanuts are legumes so when peanuts or soy are an issue- luckily other legumes are not usually an issue due to low cross reactivity.
-
Where one species of fish is an issue- there are often more. 🐠 🐟
-
Tree nuts have a high cross reactivity.
-
But of course - in the allergy world- where it is safe to do so- it is useful to keep non IgE allergens in the diet to avoid development into the IgE allergies- the ones that can be associated with life threatening anaphylaxis.
