We were proud to be part of the inaugural International Medical Graduate Conference at the State Library Melbourne. IMGs make up one-third of Australia’s medical workforce and play a vital role in caring for our communities, and supporting them is at the heart of what we do.

Our team delivered two key sessions:
Dr Owen Bradfield, Chief Medical Officer – Navigating medico-legal issues and understanding rights and opportunities for IMGs, including tackling racism in medicine.
Dr Pamela J. Ferrada, MTeach, PhD, Member Education, Knowledge, and Research Manager – Learning to learn strategies for IMGs: Reducing cognitive load, enhancing cultural adaptation, and promoting safe patient care.

It was fantastic to connect with so many IMGs and colleagues, share insights, and strengthen support across the sector.

Today is R U OK? Day – a reminder to check in with colleagues, peers, friends, and family.
At MIPS, we know these conversations matter every day of the year. As healthcare professionals, you’re often supporting others through difficult times. But it’s just as important to pause and ask yourself and those around you: “Are you OK?”

Research shows that regular check-ins can strengthen wellbeing, connection and resilience. And you don’t need to have all the answers – listening with empathy and showing genuine care can make a real difference.

🟡 Today, we encourage all our members to take a moment to reach out. Start the conversation. Share the message. Because asking “Are you OK?” any day of the year could change a life.

👉 Free resources are available from R U OK? to help you feel confident starting these conversations: https://www.ruok.org.au/

Since August 2024, most Australian healthcare professionals have gained new workplace rights under the Fair Work Act amendments. The right to disconnect allows employees to refuse unreasonable contact outside working hours, but what does this mean for medical practice?

Key considerations for healthcare professionals:
→ On-call and recall work arrangements remain protected
→ Compensation structures affect your right to refuse contact
→ Your role and personal circumstances matter in determining reasonableness
→ Open dialogue between employers and employees prevents disputes

Understanding these provisions helps create healthier work environments whilst maintaining quality patient care. Knowledge is your best protection.
