In many cases, birth can be physically and emotionally demanding—especially when labor is prolonged, assisted (forceps or vacuum), involves a caesarean section, or results in a fast delivery. These challenging experiences can leave subtle imprints on a newborn’s body, affecting comfort, sleep, digestion, and overall well-being.

This is where pediatric osteopathy may help.
Osteopathy is a gentle, hands-on therapy that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and adapt. For babies, treatment involves extremely light, calming touch—often so soothing that many infants fall asleep during a session.

An osteopath trained in paediatrics can assess and help ease areas of tension or strain that may have resulted from the birthing process. These may include:
* Head or neck tension (which can lead to feeding difficulties or a preference to turn one way)
* Colic-like symptoms or unsettled behavior
* Sleep disturbances
* Discomfort lying on their back
* Flattening of one side of the head (plagiocephaly)
Every baby is unique, and osteopathy doesn’t replace medical care—but it can be a valuable, complementary support for your baby’s comfort and development.

A gentle touch can make a big difference.
If your baby had a difficult birth or seems unsettled for reasons you can’t quite explain, it might be worth exploring osteopathic care. Many parents find it not only helps their baby—but also brings reassurance and peace of mind in those early weeks of parenthood.

📞 If you have questions or would like to know if osteopathy might be suitable for your baby, feel free to get in touch. We’re here to support you both.

Birth injuries are more common than you may realise. High on the list are scalp injuries, clavicle fractures, torticollis, nerve palsies, and bruising.

These injuries often cause unsettled babies who require nuanced positioning at the breast in order to feed.

Managing pain, avoiding pressure on injured parts, coming to the feed in a neurological organised state…this is all part of the learning that occurs when parents receive support on how to breastfeeding their injured baby.

For optimal preservation of breastmilk’s benefits, it’s best to keep reheating temperatures below 40°C or about body temperature.
This helps maintain its protective qualities while making it comfortable for your baby to drink.
Before feeding, test the milk on the inside of your wrist. It should feel warm, but not hot.

Gently releasing areas of muscle tension… Babies love having their tight spots worked on, just like we do.
Tension in the back muscles can occur for many different reasons. For example it can be residual from birth strain, from a recent respiratory illness especially if bub has been coughing, or from doing lots of movement especially when new motor skills are being learned.
