A Special Delivery Professional Services ~ Birth Support ~ www.aspecialdelivery.com.au

Pregnancy, Birth and becoming a Parent is life changing, I am a firm believer that having support and a mentor during this time can make the transition so much smoother and less overwhelming. I believe that how a woman is made to feel when she is pregnant, when she births and is breastfeeding her baby can impact on her ability to mother her children in a profound way. I respect your decisions surrounding your birth, and the choices you make around parenting - and I will support them without judgement and criticism.

Announcement From Alisha, Aaron & Amber

Dear Clients, Friends & Family of Mum (Claire),

With so much sadness we want to let you know that our dear Mumma Claire passed away on Friday night September 19th after a long battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by those who loved her dearly and supported so beautifully to the end by the staff at Toowoomba Hospice.

As you all know, Mum was such a beautiful, vibrant, compassionate woman.
For anyone wanting to have the details for joining us for her Celebration of Life, please message her sister, Eleese Wyborn.

If you would like to send in stories of how Mum touched your life, please share them below in the comments or send them to Beth Beth for Mums Celebration of Life. X

Incredibly powerful words.

PSA- they skipped a chapter in your birth book.

Or maybe, they missed the whole damn point.
Birth is not about measuring your dilation. It's not about practicing positions or measured breathing. It's not about neat stages or your carefully curated plan.

Birth is becoming one with the universe. It's about being broken open, brought to your knees, humbled by the magnitude of the sensation- and then breaking through.

Birth is meeting your humanity. It's suddenly feeling connected to every mother on earth. It's recognizing that-despite our differences and the walls of separation we create-we've all felt the same pain.

Birth is returning to nature. It is becoming a volcano. A tornado. A hurricane of strength. It is holding a storm within you. It is the highs and the crashes. Expanding and contracting. Testing the limits of this humanly form.
Birth is heavy. Grounded. You are a mountain, a planet, the world.

You are a sweaty human in a paper gown under fluorescent lights and you are the universe. You are the most sacred expression of existence. A divine portal to the magical unknown. A starship infinity. Puking into a plastic bucket.

Birth is a psychedelic trip beyond any drug you've ever dropped. It's sitting at the feet of god and then realizing that she is within you, and you are birthing her, and you are her. It is hovering above your birthing scene at a dizzying distance while simultaneously being more present in your body than any before. It is feeling people whispering down the hall and hearing the heat of the washcloth on your neck. It is leaning into the sweetest comfort of touch one moment and then recoiling from the very thought of another human close to you the next.

Birth is beyond our neatly organized words. It transcends measure and reason and logical thought. Sweating and swaying and swearing in languages you didn't know you knew.

They skipped a chapter in your birth book. So, I'll write it for you:

You are birthing a galaxy and you are the stars and you have been turned inside out and you are peeing in your nightgown. There is no need to learn or plan. You are birth. You are the source of that power.

Asking whether hospital birth is safe is very different to asking whether home birth is safe. What does the latest Cochrane review say?

The magic of skin to skin : and the sacred hours after birth.

💖DID YOU KNOW...💖
Babies who are kept skin to skin immediately after birth for at least an hour, are more likely to latch to the breast?

There are numerous studies that show that when mothers and babies are kept skin to skin (not wrapped up in a blanket) the baby’s temperature, heart rate and breathing are more stable, the baby’s blood sugar is higher, they are less likely to cry, and more likely to latch on and breastfeed.

In addition to all of that… skin to skin contact after birth allows for the baby to be colonized by the mother’s bacteria. Along with breast milk, this will support the baby's short and long term immunity and overall health.

Ideally, your baby should be kept skin to skin with you for at least one hour after the birth and then for as many hours as possible for the first several weeks and even beyond.

More skin to skin contact is associated with higher rates and longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding.

Dr Sara Wickham discusses how to cancel labour induction. And where to get more information if you need it before making your decision.

Always an inspiration.

Always an inspiration.

"When the woman is supported by midwives and others to follow her instincts and respond to her labour and birth as it unfolds, she becomes the focus of attention rather than the focus being on the clock, or on what “should” be happening, or on policies, protocols and guidelines that might interfere with the physiology of normal birth."

This is one of my favourite quotes from 'Birthing your baby' which I mentioned in my recent blog post about the timing of birth.

Postpartum hemorrhage is ON THE RISE…

(I repost this every so often for new folks here)

Why? Likely due to the staggering increase in the use of induction, augmentation, epidurals & c-sections.

The most common reason for hemorrhage (up to 80% of cases) is uterine atony - when the muscles of the uterus have been so overworked during labor that they are too exhausted to help stop bleeding after birth.

What’s one of the top reasons for uterine atony to occur?

Induction or augmentation WITH PITOCIN.

So, let’s get this straight - we tell people that it’s too dangerous for them to stay pregnant past a certain date & administer Pitocin to get their labor started or hurry it up.

Because the contractions caused by Pitocin are more frequent/stronger/longer than natural contractions, the uterus becomes exhausted. There is more bleeding than usual because the uterus can’t clamp down & stop it. A hemorrhage is suspected (blood loss is usually visually estimated, not truly measured), and the same drug that caused the problem is given to solve the problem.

The circle of Pitocin is complete.

Because of the highly medicalized active management of labor & birth in hospitals, Pitocin is often given to everyone preventatively in the 3rd stage of labor (unless you know to decline). It’s always optional.

Are there ways to help prevent postpartum hemorrhage naturally?

YES!

👎 NO Pitocin (or other uterotonics) during labor
👎 NO pulling on the cord (cord traction)
👎 NO immediate cord clamping (wait for white)
👎 NO vigorous “fundal massage” or unnecessary manual removal of placenta

👍 YES to immediate skin-to-skin with baby
👍 YES to breastfeed baby right away after birth
👍 YES to waiting for the cord to turn white & the placenta to be birthed on its own
