"THE THIN RED LINE FOR WOMEN

Many things have changed over the years as regards to women's rights. Because of these changes I am making a choice to share my views publicly as they regard the current political phenomenon.

For those who don't know me well, I was raised a feminist and studied feminism as part of my 6 year Priestess studies. I have simply become more radical with age.

I have been involved with and organized women only spiritual activities since 1994. I attended an all women's seminary based in Goddess Spirituality. I have consistently maintained that women have the right to assemble together without males present. This is not new. In years past, there was much objection that women should not be allowed to gather alone. Men constantly were demanding entrance to my women's circles. Some women would also criticize us for not letting in men.

And still, we persisted.

A new take on this same old issue has arisen in the past 7 or 8 years. Men who identify as women have demanded entrance to women's spaces. In fact, a male who occasionally dressed in womanface demanded entrance to my circle in Iowa. He was a known s*xual predator and laid unwelcome hands on two women I knew personally. This man was even a “Peeping Tom” watching one of my rituals while clearly s*xually aroused.

Womanface definition: Males who deliberately behave and dress in stereotypically feminine ways. It is a form of s*xism that reinforces gender stereotypes.

When I denied this man entry to my circle, he recruited the Unitarian Universalist Church in Des Moines, Iowa to be his “defenders”. The female Social Justice Minister there ran a very successful city wide boycott against me, my businesses and my women's circle. All because I would not let anyone born male into my group.

My commitment to women and to women only spaces has not changed since 1994. I worked at the Wisconsin National Organization for Women. I organized a bus full of women to attend the March for Women's Lives in 2004 in Washington, D.C. I worked at the all female women's seminary that trained me. I volunteered with and helped to organize Take Back the Night rallies in Madison, Wisconsin.

The public perception of women's rights and women's issues is what has changed. The “monstering” of any person who says the simple truth, that a male can never “turn into” a female is the new idea that has spread like wildfire throughout Western culture. No amount of hormones or surgery will change a male's DNA or the fact that they were raised with male privilege.

Women bond through shared oppression. That oppression is based on our biology. That fact crosses class, race and nationality. All girls and women are taught to fear male violence. It is a simple fact of life.

“Across their lifetime, 1 in 3 women, around 736 million, are subjected to physical or s*xual violence by an intimate partner or s*xual violence from a non-partner – a number that has remained largely unchanged over the past decade.” Mar 9, 2021 World Health Organization

Women deserve s*x segregated safe spaces. Full Stop.

Women need s*x segregated safe spaces to heal, grow, connect and think without males present.

This simple idea of women's sacred space that I have participated in and facilitated since 1994 now gets me called a “bigot”.

And still, I resist.

I stand for women. I defend women. The vast majority of my life's work has been about helping women .

I will not now nor ever capitulate. This is my thin red line and I am holding it. We are the s*x that has been oppressed in this culture since patriarchy was invented 6,000 – 8,000 years ago across the globe.

Females have had our rights, our personhood, our very existence threatened and harmed as a matter of course for so long we cannot even see how very brainwashed we all are.

There is no such thing as feminine and masculine behavior. Those are all restrictive, outdated stereotypes.

I am a gender abolitionist. The very concept needs to go on the trash heap.

I am a radical feminist.
I am a Priestess of the Goddess.
I stand with women and girls, forever.

I really love this perspective. What a great idea to have your future self as your hero. It's the best person to strive to be.

We should not strive to be someone else. We should strive to be our future healthier, wiser, happier selves.

This is so inspiring. Especially if you are struggling with something long term.

Watching it gives me perspective and optimism.
Very moving

One of the best reads this Sunday. Deserves to be shared far and wide to every parent you know:-

To have a child is to be vulnerable; to accept that your heart will wander around outside your body for the rest of your life. It is to confront the impossible truth that you cannot shield them from the world.

Imagine now that child comes to you, distressed by their s*x, feeling they do not conform, they no longer want to be a boy or a girl. You do not know what to do. You turn to the internet and there you find Mermaids, “helping gender-diverse kids…since 1995”.

A charity invited to parties at No 10 Downing Street and to give evidence to MPs, lauded by celebrities such as Emma Watson, receiving National Lottery Funding and major corporate sponsorship. All have given their stamp of approval, helping take it from a charity receiving £127,000 in 2017 to £1.85m in 2021.

This charity tells you that if you do not affirm your child as trans then they may commit su***de. Mermaids CEO Susie Green talks about taking her child to the US for puberty blockers aged 12, oestrogen aged 13, and to Thailand for surgery on their sixteenth birthday. She declares “I have my daughter, whole and alive, but if I had refused to listen then it’s very likely that I would have a dead son”. While one has to respect this as her experience it is not necessarily a template for everyone else.

On the forums users direct you to private online clinic GenderGP as a fast-track to hormones for your child. Founded by Helen and Michael Webberley, the latter was struck off the UK medical register for “wide ranging failings”, and providing treatment without adequate tests, assessments or examinations. The former suspended for putting patients at “unwarranted risk of harm”.

Elsewhere on Mermaids website and forums, staff without medical qualifications declare puberty blockers totally reversible, and persistently laud their “hugely positive impact”. This is despite increasing concern that puberty blockers affect brain and bone development and lock children on to a medical pathway.

Online, children are allowed to advise other children on treatment and surgery, while Mermaids staff despatch breast binders, without parental knowledge, despite Mermaids being aware that 97 percent of adult users experience health impacts including pain, rib fractures, changes to the spine, headaches, respiratory and skin infections and muscle wasting.

I wish I could say that Mermaids explores with parents why there has been a dramatic increase in children with gender distress, or shows curiosity as to why two-thirds are teenage girls, or same-s*x attracted, or that more than a third have autistic traits. But discussion of the Cass Review is studiously narrow, and Mermaids’ Chair has declared it ‘not Mermaids’ field’. No space is preserved to explore whether something else might be going on and that a child may not be ‘trans’.

And it is this failure which makes organisations’ support for Mermaids so worrying. They have failed to look beyond the surface.

Why does Mermaids feel the need to curate information? Why is acknowledging uncertainty, and concerns so difficult? Why is there not more caution when the unnecessary, lifelong medicalisation of children is a potential outcome? Why are they challenging the much needed new charity LGB Alliance in court?

And now it has been revealed that Mermaids, appointed a trustee who gave a presentation at a conference discussing access to professional help for “people who are attracted to children”. Last year he asked, “is it really that children or young people having s*x is the problem?”.

Taken together, Mermaids’ practices are questionable. Combined with an evangelical approach, and the brushing away of concerns as “smears” or “transphobia”, and Mermaids is a siren for the unwary.

Nikki da Costa was Director of Legislative Affairs at Downing Street. The fee for this article will go to Aurora New Dawn, a charity for victims of domestic abuse, s*xual violence and stalking.

Celebrities and organisations have some explaining to do: why did they support this group for so long despite the red flags?
