Reusing needles

Eek. No. No. No.

I fu***ng HATE those dermarollers that people use at home and ‘clean’ between uses. They use the same roller for weeks and sometimes months at a time.

Dermarollers CANNOT be cleaned sufficiently between uses to be considered sterile, I’ve banged on about this before. But in addition to not being able to be cleaned between uses, they also can’t be repolished.

What the hell are you talking about Bianca? Who’s polishing needles?

Well, the machines that manufacture them before their first use polish them. No amount of an at home cleaning routine can repolish them.

Meh, what’s the big deal?

Well, there is a study that took close up photos of acupuncture needles, pre and post a single treatment (link is in my bio to have a read of the full study and see all the DISGUSTING post treatment pictures).

Once the needles were used once, the integrity of the needle point and shaft were incredibly different; completely blunt point, random shaving of metal lifting up, tissue and fluid on the shaft as well as up, under, and around irregular areas of the metal. There is no way to both clean and smooth it all back down.

The only time needles should be reused is in war like conditions where there is absolutely no other option - not from people sitting at home, buying dermarollers online and then giving themselves skin infections.

PLEASE see an acupuncturist or an aesthetician for microneedling if that’s what you want… or use a brand new dermaroller each time.

MENOPAUSE AND PERIMENOPAUSE

Why do we picture a far older person in our head when we think of menopause? When in reality, menopause can come much earlier than our ideas and perimenopause even earlier.

The average age for menopause is 51/52 years old, with the range being 45 to 57. But perimenopause can start about 10 YEARS before that!

That means, that if you’re in your early 40’s and experiencing weird stuff going on with your cycles, you’re not imagining it and it could very well be the beginning of perimenopause.

The most commonly seen early perimenopause symptoms I see in clinic are erratic or different cycles, and this varies from person to person. Sometimes it can be as slight as suddenly having small clots, or suddenly having a varied cycle length by a day or two.

MENSTRUAL BLOOD ISN’T WATER.

3 weeks ago, the first study on menstrual product absorbency was done… with blood. Every other study on pads and tampons, up until three weeks ago, had always been conducted with water.

WATER.

As a surprise that comes to no one, they found that pads and tampons are nowhere near as absorbent as previous studies suggested. No s**t.

And, of course, cups and discs were epic at holding the most amount of menstrual blood.

(Oh… and period un**es were awful. Click the link in my profile and read the study. They’re basically a panty liner 😳)

So what’s this mean?

-It means people are being massively under-diagnosed with heavy menstrual periods
-It means the ‘average blood loss’ during a menstrual cycle is wrong
-it means people are falling through the cracks and being under diagnosed with other serious conditions that start with heavy menstrual bleeding
-it means absorbing period products are being made w***y nilly with no understanding of real use requirements

Also, the blood that was used in this study was human blood, but it wasn’t menstrual blood, and it wasn’t modified to be as viscous / coagulated as real menstrual blood. There was no tissue, there were no clots, there was no vaginal discharge. So it STILL wasn’t an accurate representation of how menstrual blood is absorbed by pads and tampons.

The standard question, outside of a Chinese Medicine consultation, is ‘how many pads or tampons do you go through in a 24 hour period?’ The answer is then cross checked against inaccurate menstrual blood loss averages.

In Chinese Medicine, we ask a zillion questions about menstrual cycles; we know about your clots and the colour of the blood and the duration and spotting and pain and if you have to wake up in the middle of the night to change your pad.

And I’ve always loved trying to convince patients to use cups and discs so they can easily track what’s going on with their cycles. (*cough*cough* check out now)

GAHHH.

So anyway, here’s to better research for menstrual products. Sincerely, those of us who have never bled water🤦🏽‍♀️

All the moisturisers for eczema!

Flick through to see the most commonly used moisturisers by my eczema patients.

Good ol’ Cerave, QV, Dermaveen, and E45. Nothing fancy here.

Why? Why not ‘natural’ or ‘clean’ moisturisers? Why not ones with a bit of lavender oil? Why no coconut oil? Why not a home made moisturiser?

Because… I actually want your skin to improve. The words natural and clean are a joke when it comes to skin care. Fragrance, including essential oils, are an eczema patient’s worst enemy; they will screw your skin up terribly. Coconut oil… it’s 2023. Eat it. It’s not helpful at all for your barrier impaired skin when applied topically. And home made moisturisers, begone. Unless you’re a chemist or a dermatologist, there’s no way you can make an elegant formula like these eczema specific moisturisers with your pantry items.

I do sometimes have patients who try eczema moisturisers from mainstream ‘natural’ brands and over the years I’ve found that they’re more often a miss than a hit. Like I said, I want your skin to get better, so I don’t really recommend them.

Finally, remember that there is often a bit of trial and error with eczema. What works in summer might not in winter. What works one year might not the next. As your barrier improves or deteriorates, you’ll need a different moisturiser 💕
